Understanding Given in Return

Bhagavad Gita 10.10

Meaning · English

To those who are ever steadfast and who worship me with love, I give the knowledge of the mind by which they come to me.

Three terms carry the verse. Satata-yukta means ever steadfast: satata is 'constantly', yukta is 'joined' or 'yoked', so the person is kept joined to Krishna and not only on good days. Priti is love, and purvakam means 'preceded by', so the devotion starts from love and is not a duty done first and loved later. Buddhi-yoga is the 'yoga of understanding': buddhi is the discerning intellect, yoga is a joining. Krishna tells Arjuna that for people who keep up loving devotion, he himself gives them this clear understanding. The aim of that understanding is stated plainly: by it they come to him. The reason is that no one can reach him by cleverness alone. The understanding is a gift, and love is what makes a person ready to receive it. The verse asks for a steady, affectionate turning toward him, and then leaves the giving to him. Shankara reads the understanding as the knowledge that dissolves the sense of being separate from Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as growing devotion, ripening into a clear vision of the Lord and a nearness to him. Madhva stresses that it is the Lord's grace that grants it, and that it comes to those who are devoted.

A seedling on a windowsill is watered a little every morning, not flooded once a month. It leans toward the glass on its own. Steady, loving attention is the watering; the light that reaches the plant is the understanding Krishna gives, which no amount of straining by the plant could produce.

1. Choose one small daily act you can do at about the same time, such as lighting a lamp or sitting quietly for five minutes after waking. 2. Do it with warmth, thinking of God as someone you are glad to see, and not as a task to finish. 3. Keep it going for a week, even on a tired or distracted day, and keep it short enough to manage. 4. At night, notice whether any matter felt clearer than before. Do not push for an answer.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while her son is in surgery. She has no control over the outcome and her mind races through every bad possibility. She has also kept up a small habit for years: a few quiet words of prayer each night, said with affection, not fear. The verse speaks to her moment this way. First, she does not try to solve the night by thinking harder. She returns to the habit she already has and says her words to God as to someone close. Second, she stays with it even though her mind wanders, which is what steadfastness asks. Third, she waits without demanding a feeling or an answer. Krishna's teaching is that clarity is given to such a person, and she may find that what to ask the surgeon, or how to speak to her son afterward, comes more plainly. Ordinary experience confirms that a settled routine steadies a frightened mind. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, that the fear will vanish, or that prayer replaces the doctors.
