A Lamp Inside the Heart

Bhagavad Gita 10.11

Meaning · English

Out of compassion for them alone, I, dwelling within their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

Three words carry this. Anukampa is compassion, literally a trembling along with another, a shaking in sympathy. Ajnana is not-knowing, and tamas is darkness. Krishna calls the darkness ajnana-born: it comes from not knowing, not from wickedness. Jnana-dipa is the lamp of knowledge, and it is bhasvat, shining on its own. The plain sense: Krishna tells Arjuna that for those devoted to him, he himself removes the darkness of ignorance. He does it from within their hearts, with a lit lamp of knowledge. The word eva, only, marks that this is done purely from compassion. The devotee's love does not buy it, and no other motive lies behind it. Why say it? The verse before speaks of Krishna giving understanding to the steadfast. This one answers how that understanding arrives: it is a gift from inside, not something dragged in from outside. It also tells Arjuna, who is confused, that his darkness is not a verdict on him. What it asks of the listener is openness. The lamp is already placed within the heart. Shankara reads the lamp as knowledge of the Self, which ends ignorance itself. Ramanuja reads it as devotion ripened into clear knowledge of God, given by grace. Madhva stresses that this grace is Krishna's free act, offered to the devoted.

A village house at dusk with the power cut. Someone walks in with a lit oil lamp, and the corners that looked full of shapes turn out to be a chair and a coat. The lamp is knowledge, the dark room is ignorance, and the light does not fight the dark, it simply shows what was there.

1. Tonight, pick one thing that confuses or worries you, and write it in one plain sentence. 2. Sit quietly for five minutes with the lights low, and say nothing in answer to it. Just stay with the question and ask to see it clearly. 3. Afterward, write one thing that looks plainer than it did. If nothing did, leave it, and look again tomorrow at the same hour.

A man sits in his parked car outside a hospital, unable to go in. His father's test results came back that morning, and his mind has built a hundred frightening shapes out of one word on a report. The verse speaks to what happens next. Krishna says the darkness is born of not knowing, so the first step is to see that the fear is made of ignorance, not of fact. He tells Arjuna the light is already inside, in the heart, so the man need not hunt for it elsewhere. He can stop, breathe, and ask one clear question: what do I actually know right now? He knows his father is alive and that the doctor will explain. Then he walks in and asks the doctor plainly. Ordinary experience confirms that fear shrinks once a thing is named and seen in full. The verse does not promise a good result. It does not take away illness or grief, and it is no substitute for the doctor's own explanation and care. It speaks only of the darkness of not seeing.
