Meaning · English
Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Abode, the Supreme Purifier. You are the Eternal, Divine Person, the Primal Being, the Unborn, the Great.
Arjuna answers Krishna here, and what follows is his own view in that moment, not yet the book's settled teaching. Three words carry it. Brahma comes from a root meaning to grow or swell; it names the vast reality that everything else rests in. Dhama is a dwelling, a resting place, and also a radiance; Arjuna calls Krishna the supreme place where things come to rest. Pavitra is a purifier, whatever cleans what touches it. After these he piles up names: a person who is lasting, divine, the first of the gods, never born, and the Great, all-pervading. Why now? Krishna has just said that he lights a lamp in the hearts of those who love him and clears the darkness of ignorance. Arjuna, standing in that light, reaches for words big enough for the friend driving his chariot. Shankara reads Brahman as the attributeless reality, with which Krishna is one. Ramanuja reads the names as describing the Supreme Person, who has form and good qualities. Madhva reads every name as Vishnu, distinct from souls and matter.
When cloud lifts off a mountain you have driven toward all morning, you stop and start naming what you see: tall, old, white, enormous, the source of the river. One word is too small. Arjuna's string of titles is that kind of naming, a man finding the sky clear and running out of single words.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and recall one person whose words once cleared a dark problem for you. 2. On paper, write four or five short names for what they were to you, as Arjuna does, in your own plain words. 3. Notice whether naming them makes you quieter or more restless. If you can, tell them.
A village schoolteacher on her last day sits in the staff room. A former pupil, now a surgeon, walks in, tries to thank her, and cannot finish a sentence. He says: teacher, guide, the one who stayed late, the one who believed me. The titles come in a heap because one word will not hold it. Arjuna does the same after Krishna speaks of a lamp lit in the heart against ignorance. He does not argue or ask for proof. He says, one after another, what he now takes Krishna to be, and the saying makes the moment real to him. Ordinary experience bears this out: a thank-you spoken aloud settles a feeling that stayed vague while it was only felt. What Arjuna says is his view as he stands in the chariot, and the text gives it as his. It does not take away his fear of the battle ahead, and it settles no doubt for the one who reads it. It shows what recognition sounds like when it arrives.
