Sages Bear Witness
Bhagavad Gita 10.13
Meaning · English
All the sages declare you so: the divine sage Narad, and Asit, Deval and Vyas as well. And now you yourself, personally, are telling me the same.
Arjuna has just called Krishna the Supreme, and here he says why he is not speaking only from his own feeling. He offers witnesses. The word rishi means a seer, someone who has looked into the nature of things and reported what he saw. Devarshi means a seer among the gods, and Narad carries that title. Asit, Deval and Vyas are named beside him, so the testimony comes from several people, not one. The last clause turns from them to Krishna. Svayam means oneself, in person. Krishna is now saying the same thing about himself, directly to Arjuna. So this is Arjuna's reasoning in that moment: what the seers declare and what Krishna says agree. A claim backed by many voices, and then by the one it concerns, is easier to trust than a claim standing alone. Arjuna speaks this as his own conviction, and it is his way of explaining why he believes. Shankara reads the sages' words as authority that points to Krishna as the Supreme Reality. Ramanuja takes them as confirming Krishna's supreme personhood with all his glories. Madhva takes the same testimony as establishing Krishna's complete supremacy over everything else.
A traveler is told a village well gives sweet water. Three neighbors who drink from it daily say the same. Then the person who digs and keeps the well says it too. Arjuna stands where the traveler does, with the seers as the neighbors and Krishna as the keeper, all giving one answer.
1. Choose one thing you believe about someone you trust, perhaps a parent, a teacher or a friend. This evening, write down who else has seen it to be true. 2. Ask one older person in your life what they have seen of that quality, and listen for five minutes without correcting them. 3. Then notice what you have seen yourself, firsthand. Write one line on whether their account and yours match.
A woman stands in a stairwell with a pen, about to sign a lease on a flat. The rent is close to all she can spare. Two neighbors have told her the landlord returns deposits and fixes leaks. She hesitates, then the landlord himself says plainly what he will and will not do, and it matches what the neighbors said. She signs. Arjuna's reasoning in the verse has the same order. First there are other people who have looked, and many of them, not one. Then the one in question speaks, and the words agree. Ordinary experience confirms that a claim we hold on a single voice feels shaky, and one that several independent voices and the source itself support feels steadier. For Arjuna the sages are the neighbors and Krishna is the landlord, and he says the two accounts meet. The limit is plain. Agreement among witnesses gives a reason to trust, and it does not spare anyone from the hard moment of acting, nor does it make the outcome certain. Arjuna still has to stand in the chariot and decide what to do next.
