Beyond Even Gods

Bhagavad Gita 10.14

Meaning · English

Everything you tell me, Keshava, I accept as true. Truly, Lord, neither the gods nor the demons can grasp your personality.

Arjuna speaks here, and this is his view in that moment. Two words carry it. Ritam means truth, what is in order and as it is. Manye means I accept, a settled acceptance rather than a passing guess. Vyakti means personality, how someone shows up and can be known. Arjuna says he accepts everything Krishna has told him as true. He has just named the sages who say the same, and now he says it himself. Then he gives his reason. If the devas, the celestial gods, cannot understand Krishna's personality, and the danavas, the demons, cannot either, then no one's own cleverness is enough. The gods are the most exalted beings he can think of, and the demons are their opposites in temperament. Both fall short. So his trust rests on what Krishna tells him, not on anything he has worked out himself. Among the commentators, Shankara reads the verse as pointing to a Lord beyond all ordinary knowing. Ramanujacharya stresses that the Lord is known only when he chooses to reveal himself. Madhva emphasizes the gap between the Lord and every other being. Each reading is theirs, not Arjuna's own words.

A child holds a parent's hand at the edge of the sea. She can paddle in the shallows and fill a bucket, but she cannot take in the whole water. She trusts what her parent tells her about the deep. Arjuna's position is the same: some of the Lord can be told to him, though none of it can be measured by him.

1. Pick one thing you rely on but do not fully understand, such as a medicine, a bridge, or an elder's advice. Name it aloud today. 2. Write down one sentence on why you trust it, whether from who told you, how long it has held, or how it has treated others. 3. Tonight, spend two minutes noticing where trust and understanding differ in your own life. Do not try to settle it.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. The surgeon explained the operation twice, and he understood perhaps half. He wants to follow every step and cannot. He keeps rehearsing questions he has no way to answer. Arjuna's words describe a different posture. He accepts what he has been told, and he admits plainly that understanding has a limit. In the corridor, that would mean asking the one or two questions that matter, then letting the rest rest with the people trained for it. The man can stop trying to be the surgeon and simply stay present, hold the tea someone brought, and wait. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind straining at what it cannot reach grows more tired and no wiser. The text's own teaching is that the Lord is beyond even the gods, and Arjuna's acceptance is the answer to that. The limit is this: accepting does not make the surgery go well, and it does not ease the fear. It only changes how the waiting is spent.
