Only He Knows Himself

Bhagavad Gita 10.15

Meaning · English

You yourself, indeed, know yourself by yourself, Supreme Person: Creator of all beings, Lord of everything, God of gods, Lord of the universe.

Arjuna has just said that neither gods nor demons grasp Krishna's person. Now he gives the reason, and it is his own view in that moment. Krishna can be known fully only by Krishna. The sentence says it three ways: swayam (yourself), atmana (by yourself), atmanam (yourself as the one known). Knower, means of knowing and thing known are all the same. No one else has a place to stand outside him and look in. Then Arjuna piles up names, and each one explains why. Purushottama is the highest person. Bhuta-bhavana is the one from whom all beings come to be. Bhutesha is the lord of everything that has come to be. Deva-deva is the god of gods. Jagat-pati is the master of the universe. If he is the source and ruler of everything, nothing within the world can step back and take his measure. Arjuna is not boasting about his own ignorance. He is admitting a limit, and the admission leads to a request in the verses that follow. On the classical readings: Shankara takes the Lord as the one self-aware Reality, known truly only to itself. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord's qualities are fully known to him alone and others know him as far as he reveals himself. Madhva stresses the Lord's complete difference from and greatness over every other being.

A stranger can walk around a house, photograph it, and describe the roof and the windows. Only the one who lives there knows which stair creaks and which room holds the morning light. Arjuna's point is the same: everyone else describes from outside, while Krishna alone knows himself from within.

1. Today, pick one person you think you know well, and ask them one question you have never asked, such as what they worried about this week. 2. Listen for two minutes without finishing their sentences or correcting them. 3. Afterward, note one thing you did not know. Let it show how much of even a close person stays out of sight. 4. At night, take one minute of quiet and tell Krishna, in your own words, that you want to know him and cannot do it alone.

A daughter sits by her father's hospital bed. For thirty years she has read his silences as coldness. Tonight, with the monitor ticking, she sees she has never actually known what was going on behind them. The verse speaks to that moment. Arjuna says that Krishna knows himself by himself, and nobody else does. If that holds for the Lord, it puts her failure in perspective: she was always guessing from outside. First, the verse would loosen her certainty that she had him figured out. Second, it would make her ask instead of conclude. Third, it would turn her attention from her theory of him to the man in the bed. Ordinary experience confirms that even those closest to us are known only in part, and that the best guesses improve when we ask. The verse does not say she will now understand him, and it does not heal the years of distance or change what the doctors can do. Arjuna's claim is about Krishna, not about her father, but the humility it teaches carries over: a person is not fully read from outside.
