Please, you alone can tell it all: describe completely your own divine opulences, the very ones by which you pervade these worlds and abide in them.

Arjuna is asking a question, and it is his own view in this moment that Krishna's glories are too vast for anyone else to describe. Three words carry it. Vibhuti means an opulence or glory, a power that spreads out from its source. Atma-vibhuti means these glories are Krishna's own, not borrowed. Vyapya means to pervade, to fill through and through, and tishthasi means you reside, you stay there. So Arjuna says that Krishna fills all these worlds and stays in them by means of these glories. He asks him to speak of them aseshena, without leaving anything out. The reason is in the verses just before. Arjuna has said that neither gods nor demons grasp Krishna's person, and that Krishna alone knows himself. If no one else can give the account, the only way to hear it is to ask the one who knows. The word divya, divine, tells us Arjuna does not think he could work these glories out by reasoning. Shankara takes the glories as the powers through which the Lord is present in the world. Ramanuja reads the world as belonging to the Lord, with him inside it as its inner self. Madhva stresses that the Lord stays distinct from what he fills and that his glories are real.

Incense has been burning somewhere in the house. You smell it in the kitchen, the hallway and the far bedroom, though you have never seen the stick. So you ask the person who lit it to take you there and show you every place the scent reaches. The scent is the glories spread through the worlds, and the one who lit it is the one asked.

1. This evening, stand at a window or step outside for five minutes. Look at the sky, a tree or a street. 2. Pick three things in view you cannot fully explain, such as why the leaf is that shape or how far the light has travelled. Say each one quietly to yourself without trying to answer it. 3. Write one of them down as a real question. 4. Before the week ends, ask it of one person who might know, an elder, a teacher or a neighbour, and listen to the whole answer before replying.

A grandmother sits on the terrace at dusk. Her nine-year-old grandson points up and asks where the sky ends, who put it there, and what is in all of it. She opens her mouth to give a quick answer and stops, because she does not have one. In that moment the verse would change a few small things. First, she would say plainly that she does not know the whole of it, which ordinary experience shows is usually where real learning begins. Second, she would turn the question into a request, as Arjuna does, and ask for the full account rather than a piece of it. Third, she would ask the one she trusts to know, and sit with the boy while the answer comes. In the text, Arjuna's request rests on his trust that Krishna can describe what no one else can. The verse does not promise that every question has an answer ready, that the answer will be easy to follow, or that doubt will disappear once it is given. It does not replace a teacher or a doctor where one is needed.
