Meaning · English
How am I to know you, Master of yoga, if I keep you always in mind? In which forms, in which particular things, are you to be thought of, Blessed Lord, by me?
Arjuna is the speaker, and this is his own difficulty, not a teaching. Three words carry it. Yogin is the master of yoga, the one whose power joins the unseen to the seen. Bhava means a state or form of being, a way something shows up. Chintya means what can be thought of, what the mind can hold. Arjuna has just called Krishna the Lord of everything. Now he admits a problem. A mind cannot hold everything. If he tries to keep Krishna in mind always, he does not know what to rest on. So he asks in which particular forms Krishna should be thought of. Behind the question is a need: Arjuna wants something near enough to remember. He also addresses Krishna as bhagavan, the one who holds all divine qualities, so he asks as a devotee, not as a doubter. Shankara reads the question as how the one Lord is to be recognised among the many things of the world. Ramanuja takes it as a devotee asking which glories of the Supreme Person he can meditate on. Madhva also hears a request about the Lord's presence in particular things, while keeping the Lord distinct from them.
A friend says, "I live in the city." That is true and no use to you. You cannot walk into a whole city. You need a street, a gate, a blue door. Arjuna asks Krishna for the same thing: not the whole of him, but the addresses where he can be found.
1. Tonight, pick one ordinary thing you are grateful for, such as a lit window, a warm meal or a sleeping child. 2. Sit with it for two minutes and look at it closely. Notice its details, not the idea of it. 3. Tomorrow, choose a different thing and do the same. 4. At the end of the week, notice which of them your mind went back to on its own.
A man sits on the edge of his bed before dawn. He wants to pray, or just to be steady, and he tells himself to think of something larger than his worries. The mind slides off. "Something larger" is too wide to grip. Arjuna's question speaks to this moment. He does not ask for a bigger idea. He asks for a smaller handle: in which particular things can I find you? So the man looks around. The grey light at the window. His daughter's breathing in the next room. The kettle he has just filled. Attention settles on a particular far more easily than on an abstraction, and ordinary experience confirms it. Each particular becomes a place to return to, and the returning becomes a habit. The verse does not say these things are the Lord. That answer comes later, and from Krishna. It also does not promise that the mind will stop wandering, or that worry will lift. It only gives the wandering mind somewhere definite to come back to.
