Nectar That Never Fills

Bhagavad Gita 10.18

Meaning · English

Describe to me again, Janardana, in full detail, your divine glory and opulence. For as I listen, I am never satisfied; to me your words are like nectar.

Arjuna is the speaker, and this is his wish in that moment, not a rule laid down by the book. Three words carry it. Vistara means spreading out, detail: he asks Krishna not to summarise. Vibhuti means glory or opulence, the ways Krishna's power shows in the world. Amrita means nectar, literally that which does not die. Arjuna calls Krishna Janardana, one who looks after people, which is a quiet way of asking as someone who trusts he will be looked after. He says: tell me again, because hearing is never enough. Krishna has just spoken of his glories, and Arjuna does not feel done. The reason he gives is simple. Listening to this does not leave him full, the way a meal does, and the words feel like nectar to him. What he asks for is more of the same, told slowly and in detail. Shankara reads the request as a seeker asking for further means of meditating on the Lord. Ramanuja takes it as the devotee's delight in the Lord's qualities. Madhva stresses that the glories are the Lord's own and not shared by anyone else.

A child who has heard a favourite bedtime story many times still says, once it ends, 'Again, tell it again,' and wants every small detail kept in. Arjuna is that child: the telling does not wear out, and hearing it gives him no sense of having had enough.

1. Choose one thing you already love hearing about: a person you admire, a place, a teacher's words. 2. Today, ask someone to tell you more of it, with detail, and not just the summary. 3. Listen for five minutes without hurrying them or adding your own story. 4. Afterwards, notice whether you feel fuller or hungrier, and write down one detail you had not heard before.

A grandmother's neighbour sits beside her in a hospital waiting room, and the old woman begins to talk about her late husband: how he repaired radios, how he sang off key. The neighbour has heard the outline many times. Yet she asks, 'What did he sing?' and the woman brightens. The verse would change that moment in small steps. First, the neighbour stops treating the story as already known. Second, she asks for detail, which is what Arjuna asks for. Third, she listens without waiting for her turn. Ordinary experience bears this out: attention to what we love tends to steady us, while repeated hearing of something dear rarely feels like a chore. The limit is plain. Arjuna's hunger for more does not make the wait shorter, ease the diagnosis, or replace the doctor's news. It only changes how the waiting hour is spent, and it is his own feeling about Krishna's words, not a claim about every listener.
