The Slaying of Putana

Bhagavata Purana 10.6 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

Nanda was on the road home from Mathura, and he could not stop turning over what Vasudeva had told him. His friend had warned of calamity in Gokula, and Nanda did not believe those were idle words. Uneasy about what might be coming, he took refuge in Hari. He had good reason to be uneasy. Kamsa had sent out Putana, a dreadful being whose work was killing children. She was moving through towns, villages and cowherd settlements, murdering infants wherever she found them. Creatures like her have power only where people have stopped hearing and chanting the name of the Lord of the Satvatas as they go about their daily work. One day Putana flew up into the sky and made for Nanda's Gokula. By her magic she made herself into a woman, and she walked in, free to go wherever she pleased.

Jasmine was twined through the knot of her hair. Her hips were broad and her waist was slender beneath a heavy bosom. Her clothes were fine, and her earrings flashed so brightly that her whole face shone inside its frame of curls. Her sweet smile and sidelong glances stole the heart of everyone in Vraja, and the gopis thought Sri herself had come, a lotus in her hand, to see her husband. Looking for infants, she wandered by chance into Nanda's house. There on his bed lay little Krishna, death to the wicked, his vast power hidden like fire banked under ash. He is the Self of all things, and he knew she was a killer of children, so he closed his eyes. She lifted the Infinite onto her lap the way a fool picks up a sleeping snake, thinking it is a rope. Inside she was sharp and cruel, a sword in its sheath. But the two mothers saw only her beauty. Dazzled, they stood and watched.

On that dreadful lap she put her breast to his mouth, and it carried a poison no one could live through. The Lord took hold of it with both hands and squeezed hard. In his anger he drank, and along with the milk he drew out her life. 'Let go. Let go. Enough.' she shrieked. Every vital point in her body was being crushed. Her eyes rolled back, she flung out her arms and legs again and again, and sweat poured from her as she wailed. Her cry came with such force that the earth rocked with all its mountains and the sky shook with all its planets. The worlds below and every direction rang with it, and people everywhere threw themselves to the ground, sure that thunderbolts were falling on them.

So the night-walker died. Her breasts were in torment, her mouth gaped, and her hair, arms and legs were flung wide. She fell in the cow pasture in her own true shape, like the demon Vritra felled by the thunderbolt. Even as she came down, her body crushed the trees for three gavyutis all around. There she lay, a wonder and a horror. She had fangs as long as a plough's pole, nostrils like mountain caves and breasts like boulders, and her coarse red hair was strewn everywhere. Her eyes were deep as blind wells and her hips rose like sandbanks. Her arms, thighs and feet lay like dams built across a river, and her belly was a lake drained dry. The gopas and gopis shook at the sight. Her scream had already split their hearts, their ears and their heads. And on her chest, afraid of nothing at all, the baby was playing.

The gopis rushed to him and caught him up in alarm. Then, with Yasoda and Rohini, they set about guarding him on every side. They waved a cow's tail in circles over him. They bathed him in cow's urine, and then again in the dust kicked up by the cows. With cow dung they marked twelve places on his body, speaking a name of the Lord at each one. They sipped water and set the sacred syllables first on their own limbs and hands, and then on the child. Then they prayed over him: 'May Aja guard your feet and Maniman your knees, Yajna your thighs and Achyuta your waist, Hayasya your belly and Keshava your heart. May Isha guard your chest and Ina your throat, Vishnu your arms and Urukrama your face, and may Ishvara guard your head.'

'May the Discus-bearer go before you and Hari with his mace behind you. May Madhuha with his bow and Ajana with his sword keep your sides, Urugaya with his conch the corners, Upendra the sky above, Tarkshya the earth below, and Haladhara everything around. May Hrishikesha guard your senses and Narayana your breath, the lord of Shvetadvipa your heart and Yogeshvara your mind, Prishnigarbha your understanding and the Supreme Lord your very self. May Govinda keep you at play and Madhava while you sleep, Vaikuntha while you walk and Sri's lord while you sit. And while you eat, may Yajnabhuk keep you, whom every spirit dreads. Dakinis and Yatudhanis, Kushmandas and all who seize children, Bhutas, Pretas and Pishachas, Yakshas, Rakshasas and Vinayakas, Kotara, Revati, Jyeshtha, Putana and the Matrikas, madness and fits, evil dreams and dire omens: let every one of them perish, terrified at the sound of Vishnu's name.' Wrapped in the gopis' love, the child was safe. His mother nursed him and laid him down to sleep.

Just then Nanda and the other cowherds reached Vraja from Mathura. They saw Putana's body and were astonished. 'Vasudeva must have become a seer,' they said, 'or else he is a master of yoga. This is the very calamity he warned us about.' The people of Vraja cut the body apart with axes, carried the pieces far off, heaped wood around them and burned them. The smoke rose as sweet as aguru, because Krishna had drunk from her and her sins were gone in an instant. She had given him her breast to kill him, and still she reached the place a mother reaches. People across Vraja caught the scent and came asking, 'What is this? Where is it coming from?' The cowherds told them how Putana had come and how she died, and that the child was safe, and they marveled. Nanda lifted up his son as if he had come back from death. He breathed in the scent of his head and was filled with the deepest joy. Whoever hears this story with faith comes to love Govinda.
