The Wonders of Child Krishna

The story · English
The King asked about the incarnations of the Lord Hari, and how hearing of them can quickly purify a person's heart and remove the thirst for worldly desires. He wanted to hear the wondrous stories of Krishna's childhood. Once, at the festival of the child's first turning over, held on his birth star, the women of Vraja gathered and Yasoda bathed her son. When he grew sleepy, she laid him down gently beneath a heavy wagon. He woke crying for his mother's breast, but Yasoda, busy honouring the guests, did not hear him, and he kicked his tiny, tender feet. The force of those small legs was unexpected; with a sudden crash, the heavy wagon was overturned, and the pots and pans stored within were shattered into pieces.
Yasoda and the other women of Vraja, with Nanda and the men, were bewildered by the wreckage. They looked at the crying infant and then at the overturned wagon, unable to fathom how it had turned over by itself. Some of the local boys spoke up, insisting that the child had done it: he had been crying, they said, and had kicked it over with his foot. The adult cowherds were skeptical, refusing to believe that a mere baby could possess such immeasurable strength. Yasoda, fearing for her son, quickly picked him up and comforted him. The priests performed protective rites and offered prayers. The cowherds set the wagon back in place with its load, and the priests made offerings into the fire and worshipped it with curd, rice grains, kusha grass and water.
Nanda, the father, sought to ensure the child's well-being. He invited the learned priests to perform a swastyayana—a rite for prosperity—and provided them with a feast and generous gifts. For his son's prosperity he gave them cows adorned with cloth, flower garlands and gold necklaces, and the priests blessed the child. However, the child's strength continued to surprise those around him. One day, as Yasoda fondled Krishna on her lap, she found him growing as heavy as a mountain peak and could not bear his weight. Astonished and pained by the burden, she set him down on the ground, meditated on the Supreme Person, and went about her household work.
Suddenly, a demon named Trinavarta, a servant of Kamsa, attacked in the form of a swirling whirlwind. He enveloped all of Gokula, blinding everyone with dust and filling the air with a terrifying roar. In the chaos, Yasoda lost sight of her son. The wind swept Krishna away, and Yasoda wept in agony, fearing her child was dead, like a cow who has lost her calf. Krishna had seized Trinavarta by the throat, and the demon, thinking the heavy child a stone, could not throw him off. With his throat gripped, Trinavarta's eyes bulged out, and he fell dead from the sky, with the child still on him, onto a rock in Vraja.
The demon's body shattered upon impact, like the city of Tripura pierced by Rudra's arrow. The women of Vraja, who had been weeping, were astonished to find Krishna clinging safely to the demon's chest. Nanda and the others were filled with joy to have the boy back. 'The wicked are destroyed by their own sins,' they exclaimed, 'while the saintly are freed from fear by their equanimity.' Seeing such wonders, Nanda again honoured Vasudeva's words. One day, as Yasoda nursed Krishna and fondled his smiling face, he yawned, and she saw the entire universe within his mouth: the sun, moon, fire, oceans, mountains, and all living beings. Shaking with awe, she closed her deer-like eyes, overwhelmed by the vision.
