The story · English
At the request of Vasudeva, the great sage Garga, the priest of the Yadus, traveled to the village of Vraja. Nanda welcomed him with deep respect, offering him a seat and warm hospitality. Nanda asked the sage to perform the naming ceremonies for the two children. Garga warned that he was the Yadus' well-known priest, so if he performed them, the wicked King Kamsa, who knew Nanda was Vasudeva's friend, might take Nanda's son for Devaki's child and kill him. Nanda pleaded with Garga to carry out the rituals in secret, away from prying eyes, so that the boys would be safe while they grew up in the seclusion of the cow-herds' village.
In the privacy of the home, Garga performed the rites. He named Rohini's son Balarāma, for he possessed great strength, and noted that he would also be known as Saṅkarṣaṇa, for he drew the Yadus together. Then Garga turned to Nanda's son. He revealed that in earlier ages the boy had taken three colors—white, red, and yellow—and had now become dark, so he was named Krishna. He told Nanda that the boy had many names suited to his qualities. Garga prophesied that this child would bring joy to Vraja and help the people overcome all their hardships and dangers. In his virtues, he said, the boy was equal to Narayana.
As time passed, Krishna and Balarāma began to crawl on their hands and knees through the dust and mud of Gokula. Their mothers, Yasoda and Rohini, watched them with love, and took the mud-smeared boys in their arms to nurse them. The women of the village laughed with delight as they saw the two boys pulling the tails of calves. The two mothers struggled to keep them away from danger, worrying about horned animals, fire, fanged beasts, blades, water, birds and thorns. Meanwhile, Krishna became the favorite of the village children, though he developed a reputation for being a mischievous little thief who stole butter and curd from the households.
One day, some boys told Yasoda that Krishna had been eating dirt. Concerned, Yasoda confronted him, asking, 'Why have you eaten dirt in secret? The other children, and even your older brother, tell me this.' Krishna looked at her and denied it, saying, 'I have not eaten it, mother; they are all lying. If you do not believe me, look into my mouth.' When Yasoda insisted he open his mouth, she did not see dirt. Instead, she saw the entire universe: the stars, the moon, the earth, the oceans, and the very elements of time and space, and within it Vraja and herself.
Stunned, Yasoda wondered if she was dreaming or if this was a divine illusion. She realized that this child was the all-knowing Lord of the universe. However, the Lord immediately removed her memory of this vision, wrapping her once again in a veil of motherly affection. She picked up Krishna and held him close, her heart full of love. Long before, Drona, the best of the Vasus, and his wife Dhara had asked Brahma for supreme devotion to Hari when they were born on earth. Brahma granted it: Drona was born as Nanda and Dhara as Yasoda, and Krishna lived in Vraja with Balarāma to make Brahma's word true.
