Bhagavad Gita 10.19

Meaning · English

The Blessed Lord said: Yes, dear Arjuna, best of the Kurus, I will tell you of my divine glories. I will speak only of the most prominent, for there is no end to the extent of my splendor.

Krishna answers Arjuna's request with a plain yes, and a warning about size. Two words carry the verse. Vibhuti means glory, a thing in which power or beauty shows itself plainly; the root sense is 'becoming widespread', so these are the places where the divine spreads out and can be seen. Pradhanya means 'what comes first', the chief or most prominent. So Krishna promises a selection, not an inventory. The reason is in the last clause: the extent of his glories has no limit, so a complete account cannot be given however long he speaks. He calls his glories divya, divine, which marks them as his own and not borrowed. He also addresses Arjuna as best of the Kurus, treating him as a worthy listener. What it asks of Arjuna is to take the chosen examples as pointers, not as the whole. Shankara reads the glories as the Lord's own power appearing in the world's varied things. Ramanuja stresses that they belong to the Lord as his body and attributes. Madhva stresses the Lord's difference from and supremacy over all he displays. All three agree that the list is partial.

Standing on a beach, you point to a few bright waves and say 'look at those.' You cannot point to every wave, because the sea keeps making more than you can name. Krishna's chosen glories are those few waves, and the limitless sea behind them is what he cannot finish describing.

1. Pick one ordinary thing today that strikes you as fine: a ripe fruit, a child's laugh, a well-made tool. 2. Look at it for one full minute, without hurrying to the next thing. 3. Ask what stands behind it, and let the question stay open. 4. Tonight, say aloud one more thing you noticed, and accept that you saw only a small part of what was there.

A man sits at his father's hospital bedside at night, asked by a nurse to describe what his father was like. He starts to list things, then stops, because no list will hold a whole life. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna does not claim to finish; he picks the foremost and says the rest cannot be told. For the son, that permits a few true memories, a laugh, a habit, a phrase, offered as pointers to someone larger than any account. Step by step: he chooses three, says them plainly, and leaves the gaps unfilled without feeling he has failed. Ordinary experience confirms that we know people and places best through a few vivid instances, not through complete catalogues. The limit is clear. The verse does not make the night easier, does not change what the doctors say, and does not lessen the grief. It only releases him from the impossible job of saying everything, and lets a few honest words be enough.
