The Self Within All

Bhagavad Gita 10.20

Meaning · English

I am the Self, Arjuna, conqueror of sleep, seated in the heart of every living being. I am the beginning of all beings, their middle, and their end as well.

Three words carry the verse. Atma is the soul, the Self, what a person is underneath body and mood. Ashaya is a resting place, a seat, and sthita means placed or established, so the phrase says Krishna is seated in the heart of every living being. Gudakesha is Arjuna's name, the conqueror of sleep, and Krishna uses it as he begins to tell him something weighty. Krishna says he is the Self in all beings, not only in some. The same Krishna who drives the chariot is also the one who sits within each creature. He then says he is the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings: what they come from, what holds them while they live, and what they go back to. The reason sits in the earlier lines. Arjuna asked to hear more of Krishna's glories, and Krishna starts with the nearest one, the one inside every person, before naming things far away. Shankara reads the Self here as the one inner witness in all beings. Ramanuja reads it as the inner controller who dwells in every heart and is also their maker, sustainer and withdrawer. Madhva reads it as the supreme Lord dwelling within beings while remaining distinct from them, and as the cause of their origin, upkeep and end. The verse leaves nothing out of the picture: the inside of each being and the whole span of its existence both rest in Krishna.

A stream has a spring, a long middle where it runs between banks, and a mouth where it meets the sea. All the way along it is the same water. A cup dipped anywhere holds that water too. Krishna describes himself like this: the same presence at the start, through the middle, at the close, and inside each living being.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and think of one person you find difficult. 2. Say to yourself, slowly, that the same Self Krishna describes is seated in that person's heart, as in yours. 3. Notice whether your picture of them shifts at all, and whether your jaw or shoulders loosen. Leave it there. 4. Tomorrow, when you meet them, look for one small thing in them that you had missed.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while his father is in surgery. The chairs are hard, the vending machine hums, and every footstep might be a nurse bringing news. He feels very small and very alone, and his mind runs ahead to the worst ending. Krishna's words answer him in steps. First, the one who is the Self sits in his own heart, in the same chest that is pounding now, so he is not waiting alone. Second, the same presence is in the man on the table and in the surgeon, so nobody in that building is outside it. Third, it is the beginning, the middle and the end, so this night is one stretch inside a larger span and not the whole of it. He may still pace, call his sister, and drink the bad tea. Ordinary experience shows that people bear a long wait more easily when they do not feel alone in it. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take away fear or grief. It also does not replace the surgeon, the medicine or the people who can sit beside him.
