Meaning · English

Among the twelve sons of Aditi, I am Vishnu. Among the lights, I am the radiant sun. Of the Maruts, I am Marichi. Among the stars of night, I am the moon.

Krishna has just promised Arjuna a list of his glories, and here he begins to give it. The method is simple. He names a group, then points to the finest member of it. Three words carry the verse. The Adityas are twelve sons of Aditi, a family of radiant gods, and Krishna says he is Vishnu among them. The Maruts are storm gods, a troop of wind-powers, and he is Marichi, their leader. Nakshatra means a star or lunar mansion, and among those he is the moon. For lights in general he is the sun, called radiant. The reason is Arjun's difficulty. Krishna is a friend in a chariot, and Arjuna cannot easily picture him as the source of everything. So Krishna starts from what Arjuna already admires and says the best of it is his. The ask is that Arjuna's eye learn to read excellence, wherever it shows, as a pointer to Krishna. Shankara reads these as places where God's presence is most easily recognised and so are fit for meditation. Ramanuja holds that everything has God as its inner self, so the finest of each kind shows him most clearly. Madhva stresses God as the ruler dwelling within each of them.

A traveler cannot see the far town, so a guide on the hill path points to the one tall tower catching the evening light. The tower is not the town. It is the part the eye can hold. The sun and the moon in this list work like that tower: the clearest handle on something too large to see whole.

1. Tonight, step outside or to a window for two minutes and find the moon, or the brightest star if there is no moon. 2. While you look, remind yourself that Krishna names the moon as his own among the stars. 3. Tomorrow morning, spend one minute facing the sun, with eyes closed or looking toward its light, and notice its warmth on your face. 4. Once this week, pick one thing you admire as the best of its kind, such as a tree, a cook or a song, and stay with it for a full minute before moving on.

A father walks home with his young daughter during a power cut. The street is dark, and she tugs his sleeve and asks which light in the sky is the biggest. He looks up, finds the moon first, and for the first time in weeks he stops walking. Krishna's list gives that pause a direction. Instead of asking the child to take on a large idea, it begins with what is already in view and says the brightest thing there points to him. The father does not need to explain the sky. He can stand with her and let the moon be what Krishna says it is, the best of the night's lights. Then the walk home goes on. Ordinary experience bears out one small thing here: looking up from a screen or a worry, even briefly, loosens the mind's grip. The verse also sorts the sky by how it looks. The sun is placed among lights and the moon among stars, as a watcher sees them. It is a teaching about where to look, not a lesson in astronomy. It does not ease worry about money or health, and it does not replace help where help is needed. It gives the eyes a place to rest.
