The sages asked Suta to tell the story of Shiva, the Supreme Self who is joined with Amba. Suta answered that it was a divine story, giving both enjoyment and release. Vyasa had once asked Sanatkumara the same thing, and Sanatkumara told him what the great sage Upamanyu had said to Vasudeva. Krishna, son of Vasudeva, once went to Kailasa, Shiva's dwelling, to perform austerities and win a son. On a high peak he found Upamanyu at his own austerity. Krishna bowed with folded hands and said: Upamanyu, wise and foremost among Shiva's devotees, I have come to practise austerity here for a son. Tell me of Shiva's greatness, so that on hearing it I may worship him with devotion.
Upamanyu answered gladly, remembering Shiva. Listen, Krishna, he said, to what I myself saw. While I was at my austerity I saw Shiva with his weapons and his whole retinue, Vishnu and the gods among them. The Lord had one foot, great fangs, and mouths with flames for mouthfuls. He had many eyes and a thousand feet. At the end of an age he destroys the world, and nothing in the three worlds is beyond his killing. Beside him stood his trident, called Vijaya, which can split the whole earth, dry the great ocean and bring down the wheel of the stars. With it Mandhata the emperor was killed; the demon Lavana fell in battle to Shatrughna, and the trident returned to Rudra's hand. Near it I saw the axe given to Rama Bhargava, and Vishnu's discus Sudarshana, a thousand-faced thing like a crore of suns.
I saw the thunderbolt, the great bow Pinaka with its quiver, the spear, the sword, the noose, the goad and the great club, and the weapons of the guardians of the quarters, all beside Rudra. On his right, Brahma sat in a heavenly chariot yoked to swans. On his left stood Narayana, bearing conch, discus and club, riding Garuda. Manus, sages and gods came with them. Skanda stood near the Goddess on his peacock, holding his spear, like a second fire. Nandi stood before Bhava with the trident, and the hosts of beings and the Mothers stood around. The gods surrounded Mahadeva and praised him. Everything in the world that is seen or heard I saw there at his side. I was astonished, gathered my courage, and with folded hands praised him, and I worshipped him as the rites require, my voice choked with tears.
Shiva was pleased, and spoke sweetly, almost laughing. I could not shake you from your path, however often I tried, he said. You have been tested, and your devotion is firm. Ask a boon; nothing is too hard to give you. I replied: if you are pleased, and if my devotion is steady, let me have knowledge of the three times. Give me wide devotion to you that never wavers. Let my family always have plenty of milk and rice. Let your presence always be in my hermitage, and let your devotees be friends with one another. He looked on me with kind eyes and said: you will be free of old age and death, and lack no desire. You will be honoured by sages. The Ocean of Milk will be near you wherever you wish, and I will always be present in your hermitage. Then he vanished, shining like a crore of suns.
So I saw him, Krishna, and everything he promised I received. Look: Gandharvas, Apsarases, sages, Vidyadharas and Siddhas stand here, and fragrant trees in flower and fruit in every season. All this is by his grace. I know the past, present and future truly. Even the gods do not see him unless they have worshipped him. Who is more blessed than I? He is the sovereign over Nature and the Person. From his right side he made Brahma for the making of the world, from his left, Vishnu for its protection. At the end of the age he made Rudra from his heart, and Rudra destroyed all things, moving and still. He remains as Time, swallowing the world. Therefore, Upamanyu said, worship Shankara for a son. Shiva loves his devotees and will soon be pleased with you.
Krishna, moved to devotion, asked: Upamanyu, show me mercy, and tell me who gained their desires by worshipping Shiva. Upamanyu praised the question and began. Hiranyakashipu won lordship over the gods for ten lakh years. His son Nandana, by Shiva's boon, kept Indra down for ten thousand years, and Vishnu's discus and Indra's thunderbolt shattered on his limbs. Vidyutprabha was given lordship of the three worlds, and Shiva promised: you will always be my follower. Shiva gave him a kingdom in Kushadvipa. Shatamakha the demon won a thousand sons. The sages Yajnavalkya and Vedavyasa gained knowledge and the three times. The Valakhilyas, humbled by Indra, won Garuda, who carried off the soma. Anasuya, Atri's wife, lay without food three hundred years among the pestles and was given Dattatreya, Chandra and Durvasas.
Upamanyu went on. Vikarna, Chitrasena, and Shrikara, a cowherd woman's son, each won success through Shiva. Chitrangada, Simantini's husband, fell into the Yamuna and did not die; he reached the Naga Takshaka's home, won his friendship, and came back rich. Simantini, keeping the Monday vow, gained a fine fortune. Chanchuka, a wicked woman at Gokarna, heard Shiva's teaching and reached the highest state; her husband Bindugo heard the Shiva Purana and found a good end. The courtesan Pingala and the Brahmin Madara worshipped the bull and were saved. The courtesan Mahananda, Kaikeyi, and Sadara all found peace. Kings Vimarshana and the wicked Durjana, the hunter Shabara, the outcaste Saumini, and the hunter Mahakala were all saved. Durvasas spread devotion to Shiva. Brahma, Markandeya, Indra, Bana, Dadhica and Rama worshipped him and prospered.
Shakalya worshipped Shiva nine hundred years with the sacrifice of the mind, and Shiva said: you will be an author, your fame will be endless, and your family will be adorned with great sages. Savarni worshipped sixty hundred years and Rudra said: you will write books, be famed, and be free of age and death. Upamanyu said that with one mouth he could not tell all Shiva's virtues, even in hundreds of years. Vasudeva said: you are blessed; may he be gracious to me too. Upamanyu replied: before long you will see Mahadeva, in the sixteenth month. He will give you boons, with his wife beside him. I will give you a mantra for repeating: Namah Shivaya, which grants all desires. For eight days he told stories of Shiva, and they passed like a moment. On the ninth day he initiated Krishna and taught him the great Atharvashiras.
Krishna became matted-haired and shaven, steady in mind, and practised austerity standing on his great toe with his arms raised. When the sixteenth month came, the Supreme Lord was pleased and appeared with Parvati. He was three-eyed, with the moon on his head, praised by Brahma and worshipped by crores of Siddhas, in divine garlands and robes, with his two sons beside him. Krishna, eyes wide with wonder, bowed and praised him with a thousand names. The gods, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas and great serpents rained flowers on them. Looking at Parvati's face, Shiva said: Krishna, I know you as my devotee, firm in your vow. Choose boons from me, rare in the three worlds. Krishna folded his hands and asked for eight: devotion to dharma, lasting fame, nearness to Shiva, steady devotion.
Krishna asked for ten sons for each of his sons, the death in battle of every proud enemy, and that he should never be insulted by an enemy. He asked to be most dear to all yogis. Shiva said: it will all be so, and you will have a mighty son, Samba, a cursed sun by the sages' word. Then Parvati said: I am pleased, Krishna; take boons from me. He asked that he never hate Brahmins, that his parents always be content, that he be kind to all beings, that he worship the gods with a hundred sacrifices, feed thousands of ascetics and guests, keep joy with his kin, and be dear to a thousand wives. She said: so be it. Both vanished. Krishna told Upamanyu everything. Upamanyu said that Dandin had once praised Shiva with the Thousand Names, a hymn hard for men to grasp, and told Krishna to go home remembering Shiva and become foremost of his devotees. Krishna went to Dvaraka thinking of Shiva, and the rest of the chapter tells how Rama, Rama Bhargava, Galava and others also won Shiva's grace; Sanatkumara closed by telling Vyasa he could not tell all Shiva's qualities, and even Shesha with his many mouths could not.
