How Parvati Became Golden

The story · English

Vayu tells it. After Parvati had walked around her husband Shiva in respect, she steadied her grief at being parted from him and went to the mountain of Himavat. Long ago she had practised austerities in a certain place with her friends, and out of love she chose that same place again. She first visited her father and mother in their house, bowed to them, explained what she meant to do, and received their permission. Then she went back to the forest of austerities, put aside her ornaments, bathed, and put on the plain dress of an ascetic, which is most pure. She resolved on a fierce and nearly impossible penance. In her mind she kept her husband's lotus feet always. Three times a day she worshipped him in a temporary lingam, with wild flowers and fruit, thinking: he himself will give me the fruit of this penance.

Many days passed as she practised this way. Then a great tiger saw her and came toward her with evil intent. But as he came close, his body went stiff, like a figure in a painting, held fast in her presence. She saw him approach with that intent and was not frightened as ordinary people are. The tiger could not move any limb, and hunger tormented him. He thought, she is my meal, there is nothing else, and he stared at the goddess without rest. He stood before her almost as if he were worshipping. In the goddess's heart, compassion rose: this one is always my worshipper, and I am his protector from savage creatures. By the power of that compassion, the three impurities in the tiger fell away. He suddenly became a different creature and recognised the goddess.

His hunger ended, and so did the stiffness of his body. The cruelty he was born with left him, and he was content. Knowing his life now had meaning, the tiger became her true worshipper and served the supreme goddess. In that forest he drove away other savage and wicked creatures. Her penance grew, fierce and then fiercer. Meanwhile the gods, pressed by the demons, went to Brahma for refuge. They told him of their suffering at the hands of their enemies, and how he had given Shumbha and Nishumbha boons, which made them proud. Brahma felt pity. Remembering the story that held the cause of all this, he was resolved on the demons' death. Asked by the gods to help, he went with them to the goddess's penance forest, thinking of how to end their grief.

He saw her standing firm in her great penance, Bhavani, the supreme goddess, like the foundation of the world. He bowed to her, mother of this world, wife of Rudra, and daughter of the mountain king. She saw Brahma arrive with the gods, offered him water and welcome, and he returned her courtesy. Then he asked, as though he did not know, why she did this. Brahma said: "What is there left for you to gain by this harsh penance? All success in penance depends on you. You have already won the lord of the worlds as your husband. Or perhaps it is all your play. But how do you bear being apart from him?" She said: "When you were born from him, you were my first son. When Shiva came from your forehead, I became your daughter-in-law. When the mountain king became your son, my father, you became my grandfather. How can I speak of this to my husband, in his own house? I want to leave this dark skin and become golden."

Brahma answered: "Is that all this penance is for? Your will alone would do it. Even your play serves the world. So let me ask for something. I gave the demons Nishumbha and Shumbha boons. They are proud and torment the gods, and their death is to come from you. Do not delay. Be still for a moment. A power sent forth from you will be their death." Asked by Brahma, the daughter of the mountain suddenly cast off her skin, and she became Gauri. The cast-off skin became a girl named Kaushiki, dark as a rain cloud. She was the power of illusion, Vishnu's sleep of yoga, eight-armed with conch, discus, trident and other weapons, three-eyed, moon-crowned, gentle and terrible and both, unconquerable, beautiful, never touched by desire. The goddess gave her to Brahma. He gave her a mighty lion to ride and told her to live in Vindhya, with worship by wine, meat, fish and cakes. She bowed to Gauri and Brahma, and with many powers like herself she went to Vindhya. There she killed the two demons in battle. Their bodies were cut apart by her arrows and Kama's arrows. Vayu said the battle is not described here, since it is told elsewhere.
