Upamanyu's Penance

The story · English

The sages asked Vayu how a small child, the son of Vyaghrapada and elder brother of Dhaumya, could win a sea of milk from Shiva, become a teacher of Shiva's teachings, and gain such knowledge. Vayu answered that this was no ordinary child. He had been perfected in an earlier birth, and fell from his place only to be born as a sage's son. His wish for milk became the doorway through which his penance began. Shiva gave him the ocean of milk, lordship over the hosts, and lasting childhood. His wisdom came from Shiva's grace alone, and the cause was a mother's words, born of sorrow over milk. Vayu then told how it began.

Once Upamanyu drank a little milk at his uncle's hermitage. He saw his uncle's son sitting there, full of rich milk, and he envied him. He went home and said to his mother, "Mother, give me cow's milk, sweet and warm. I do not want only a little." She was Vyaghrapada's wife, and she grieved to hear it. She held him close and wept, remembering how poor they were. But the boy kept remembering the milk and kept saying, "Give me, give me." Understanding his stubbornness, she found a way to calm it. She gathered the seeds they had collected by gleaning, ground them, stirred the paste into water, and called him gently, "Come, my son." She gave him this false milk.

He drank it and cried out in distress, "This is not milk." His mother kissed his head and wiped his lotus eyes with her hands. She said, "The rivers full of jewels, in heaven and the underworld, are not seen by the unlucky, or by those without devotion to Shiva. Kingdoms, heaven, liberation and even a meal of milk come only when Shiva is pleased. Everything comes from his grace, and nothing from other gods. How could we have milk, living always in the forest? I gave you flour in water because I am poor and unlucky. We never worshipped Shiva for wealth, so we are poor. What is given to Shiva in one life is what returns in the next."

The boy heard his mother's true and sorrowful words, and though a child he spoke boldly. "Mother, enough of grief. If Shiva is real, if Shankara is with Amba, put your sorrow aside. All will be well. Hear me: if Mahadeva exists anywhere, then sooner or later I will bring about the ocean of milk." Her heart was lifted, and she answered, "You have thought well, my son, and it adds to my joy. Do not delay. Worship Sadashiva with Amba. He is above all, the highest cause. He made the world, and Brahma and the others are his servants. We know no other Shankara."

She went on. "Give up other gods in deed, thought and word, and worship him with his hosts, with true feeling. His own mantra is Namah Shivaya. The seven crore great mantras, all with the sacred Om, dissolve into it and come out of it again. It alone suits everyone, by Ishvara's command. As Shiva protects the lowest and highest alike, so does this mantra. So leave other mantras and hold to the five syllables. With them on your tongue, nothing is hard to gain. I give you also the ash I received from your father, made in the fire of Viraja, which wards off great calamity. Take it with my permission." Then she sent him off, saying, "May Shiva be with you," and wished that the gods would do him good.

Upamanyu bowed to her and went to the Himalaya mountain. He lived on air alone, steady in mind. He made a small shrine of eight bricks and a lingam of clay, and invited Mahadeva there with Amba and the hosts. With the five syllables and forest flowers he worshipped for a long time. Certain sages, once cursed by Marichi, had become like demons, and they tormented him to break his penance. Though harassed, he kept on, crying out "Namah Shivaya" like one in pain. At that sound the tormentors left him and became sages again. But his penance grew so fierce that the whole world, moving and still, began to burn. Scorched, the gods hurried to Vaikuntha and told Vishnu everything.

Vishnu went swiftly to Mandara, bowed to Shiva, and said, "Lord, a brahmin named Upamanyu is burning everything with his penance, all for milk. Stop him." Shiva said, "I will restrain the child. Go back to your home." Vishnu comforted the gods and returned to his world. Then Shiva took the form of Indra, rode a white elephant, and went to the hermitage, shaded by a white parasol. Upamanyu bowed and said, "You have honored my hermitage by coming, lord of gods." The false Indra replied, "I am pleased. Ask any boon." Upamanyu said, "I ask only that devotion to Shiva be firm in me." Indra answered, "Do you not know me, ruler of the three worlds? Worship me. Give up Rudra, who has no qualities and is cast out of the gods' company."

Upamanyu, still reciting the five syllables, knew this man had come to obstruct his duty. He said, "You speak only because you delight in insulting Shiva. I know Rudra, the father of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshvara, beyond nature, the one I ask for. If someone hears Shiva insulted, he should give up his body and go to Shiva's world. Forget my wish for milk, you lowest of gods. I will kill you with Shiva's weapon and then give up this body." He took ash charged with the Aghora weapon, hurled it at Indra, and cried out, remembering Shiva's feet, ready to burn himself with inner fire. Shiva calmed that fire with his gentle power, and Nandi caught the weapon in midair.
