Acting Freely For Life
Isha Upanishad 1.2
Meaning · English
Doing his work in this world, a person may wish to live a hundred years. For you there is no other way than this. Done in this way, action does not stick to a person.
Three ideas carry the sentence. Karma means action: any deed, from sweeping a floor to running a household. Jijivisha means the wish to live. The text grants it plainly. Wanting a long life is not a fault. The last clause says work does not lip, which means it does not smear or stick to the one who does it, the way paint sticks to a hand. So the Isha says that a person may go on acting for a hundred years, and that this is the only way open to the one it addresses. Action is not the trouble. The trouble is action that clings: the doer who is marked by every result, every gain and every loss. The Isha answers the worry left by the first verse. If everything belongs to the Self and nothing is ours to grab, should one stop working? It says no. Keep working, in the manner the first verse describes, and the work leaves no stain. Shankara reads this as addressed to a person not yet ready to live purely by knowledge of the Self. For such a person, he says, steady duty through a whole lifetime is the one course that keeps them from being bound by their deeds. The listener is asked to stay in life, keep acting, and let the acting be light.
A man walks all day through steady rain in a waxed jacket. He is out in the weather, he gets splashed and soaked at the edges, and still he arrives dry underneath. The rain is the work of a life, the jacket is the way of acting the verse describes, and the dry skin is a person the work cannot stick to.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, answering a message or sweeping, and give it your full attention from start to finish. 2. When it is done, notice the pull to replay it, praise it or fret over it. Name that pull once, silently, and let it pass. 3. Before bed, ask which task you carried into the evening and which you set down. Tomorrow, try setting down one more.
A woman of sixty-eight is deciding, after knee surgery, whether to keep her vegetable plot. Part of her says she is too old to start another season. Another part wants the soil under her hands. The Isha would not ask her to choose between living long and working. It allows both: she may plan for a hundred years and still dig. What it changes is how she holds the work. She plants without making the harvest a verdict on her worth. If the beans fail, the failure belongs to the beans and the weather, and she does not wear it as a mark on herself. She weeds for an hour, rests, and goes in. The work ends when she puts down the trowel. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: people who carry every result home with them tire sooner than people who finish and let go. The verse does not heal the knee, promise a good crop or lift the grief of an aging body. Her surgeon's advice on how much to do still stands.
