Dark Worlds After Death
Isha Upanishad 1.3
Meaning · English
Those worlds are called sunless, wrapped in blind darkness. After death, they go to them: whoever people are who kill the self.
Three words carry the verse. Asurya means sunless, from a, not, and surya, sun. These are worlds with no light in them. Andhena tamasa means blind darkness: tamas is the heaviness that covers and hides, and here it is so thick it cannot even see itself. Atmahano janah means people who are killers of the self: hana is to strike down or slay, atman is the Self, the inner witness the Isha has been pointing to. The Isha says that those who live as though the Self were not there go, after death, to such sunless worlds. Shankara reads the killers of the self as everyone ignorant of the Self, because by ignorance they hide what they truly are, even while the body goes on living. The teacher gives this as the cost of the road the first two verses rule out: grasping at the world and treating oneself as only a doer of tasks. Nothing is said to be destroyed in the Self, which cannot be harmed. What is lost is the knowing of it. The verse asks the listener to take seriously that ignorance has a result.
A man shuts every shutter in his house at noon, then complains it is night. The sun never left the sky. The shutters are the ignorance that covers the Self, and the dark rooms are the worlds the verse describes.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a room with the lights low, with no phone and no task. 2. Ask once, quietly: who is the one aware of this room right now? Do not answer it. Just notice what stays when the thinking pauses. 3. Tomorrow, pick one routine job and notice, halfway through, whether you are present or running on habit. Say nothing to anyone about it.
A man in his late fifties sits in his parked car outside his own home after another long day, engine off, unable to go in. He has done everything asked of him, and he cannot say who he has been through it all. The Isha speaks to this moment. It names the cost of living without asking who is living: a sunless condition, a covering over what one is. First, the verse points to the question itself, since a person who has stopped asking has already begun to be covered. Second, it separates the doer from the one who knows the doing. Sitting in the car, he can notice he is tired, and notice that he notices. Third, it asks him to treat that noticing as the beginning of light rather than as a failure. Ordinary experience confirms that long stretches of busyness leave people strangely absent from their own lives. The verse does not promise that the weariness lifts, that his family's troubles settle, or that low mood needs no doctor. If the heaviness is deep or lasting, he should speak to one. The after-death worlds are the text's own teaching, stated as its teaching.
