Still, Yet Faster

Isha Upanishad 1.4

Meaning · English

It does not move, yet it is swifter than the mind. The senses could never reach it; it was already ahead of them. Standing still, it passes everything that runs. In it, the life-breath of the wind holds up all action.

The Isha describes the Self, the atman, in a paradox. Three words carry it. Anejat means not trembling, not moving. Javiyah means swifter, from the root for speed. Deva, from the root for shining, names the senses as the bright powers that carry the world to us. The text says the Self never stirs, yet outruns the mind, the fastest thing we know. The senses, which reach out toward objects, never arrive at it, because it was already there before they set out. Standing still, it overtakes all runners. The reason given is that mind and senses can only chase what is somewhere else, and the Self is not somewhere else. Last, Matarishva, the wind that moves in space, sets all action going within it. Shankara reads this wind as the life-breath, prana, and as the doer of all activity, and says the Self, itself unmoving, is the support in which every action takes place. The verse asks the listener to see that what they seek with their senses is what already stands behind the seeking.

A train platform at night: the trains rush past, each faster than the last, yet the platform lies under all of them, never leaving its place. Every journey is measured against it and begins and ends there. The Self is the platform, and the mind and senses are the trains.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room and watch your thoughts go by, one after another. 2. Notice that something is aware of each thought arriving and leaving, and that this awareness itself does not rush anywhere. 3. When the five minutes end, ask once: what was watching? Do not answer it. Just stay with the question for a few breaths.

A taxi driver stops at a red light after ten hours of driving. His phone buzzes, his mind runs through the fare, the rent, a quarrel at home. For a few seconds he stops chasing any of it and simply notices he is sitting in the seat, hands on the wheel, breathing. The verse speaks to that pause. The Isha teaches that the Self does not run with the thoughts; it is the still ground in which they run. Seen that way, each worry is a runner passing by, and he need not run after it. The light turns green, and he drives on with a little more room around the noise. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind given even a short pause tends to settle. The verse does not promise that the rent is paid, that the quarrel ends, or that tiredness leaves him. A man who is ill or exhausted still needs rest and, where it is needed, a doctor.
