Meaning · English
Krishna says: let him take up the action that turns away from worldly busyness, and, with me as his highest aim, let go of the action that pulls him further in. Once the wish to know has truly begun, let him give no weight to the urging of ritual acts. Let him keep the restraints always, and the observances now and then, as one devoted to me. Let him sit near a teacher who knows me, who is peaceful, and whose very self is me.
Three words carry the verse. Nivritta means turned back, action that leads away from the world's pull. Pravritta means pushed forward, action that drives you deeper into it. Jijnasa is the wish to know, from jna, to know. Yama are the restraints, from yam, to hold back. Niyama are the observances, from the same root with ni, to keep within bounds. Krishna tells Uddhava to choose, among his actions, the ones that loosen the world's grip and to drop the ones that tighten it, keeping Krishna as his aim. Once the wish to know has really woken, the nagging voice of ritual obligation no longer rules him. The restraints are to be kept constantly. The observances are to be kept as they fit, "sometimes", so they serve him and do not become a new burden. Last, he is to sit near a guru, a weighty teacher, who knows Krishna, is settled in peace, and has Krishna as his very self. The commentators generally read this as a path in order: duty first, then inquiry, then a teacher. It is taught here because Uddhava has asked how to be free, and Krishna answers that steady restraint and a calm teacher come before any grand insight. It asks the listener to find the wish to know and to stay near someone who has it fulfilled.
A beginner at the swimming pool holds the wall each morning and practises kicks, while the coach who swims well stands close by. The wall is the steady restraint, the coach is the guru, and the open water is the knowing the beginner wants.
1. Choose one restraint you already half-keep, such as not speaking harshly or not lying even in small things, and keep it all of today without exception. 2. Pick one obligation that only feeds your busyness and leave it undone this week, if it is safe to do so. 3. Think of one calm, wise person you know. Spend twenty unhurried minutes with them this week and notice how your own pace changes.
A woman who has run her family's catering for thirty years sits alone the night after her daughter's wedding. The noise is gone, and a quiet question comes up: what was all that for? The old urge says to take on the next event at once. The verse would change the moment in steps. She keeps the small steady habits that hold her up, such as a fixed hour for waking, a kept word, and a plain meal. She lets the question stay a question and does not bury it in more orders. She seeks out a person she knows who is settled and unhurried, and sits with them. Ordinary experience confirms that daily habits hold better than occasional bursts, and that a calm person settles those near them. The text teaches that a guru carries the knowing and the seeker carries the steadiness. It does not promise that the question will be answered that night, nor does it replace a doctor or counsellor if the heaviness she feels turns into lasting low mood.
