Meaning · English

Without pride and without envy, capable, with no sense of "mine," firm in friendship, unhurried, wanting to know what truly matters, free of fault-finding, and speaking words that are never empty. Toward wife, children, home, field, kin and wealth he stays even-minded and apart. In every being he sees the same good he wants for himself.

Krishna lists the marks of the one ready for this teaching. Four words carry most of it. Nirmama means "without mine", from mama, my: things are still used, but the grip of ownership is gone. Sauhrida, from su and hrid, means a good heart, so "firm in friendship" means loyalty that does not wobble. Arthajijnasu joins artha, the real aim, with jijnasa, the wish to know. Udasina means one who sits apart, not one who walks away. Then each clause. He is not proud and not envious. He is capable, not lazy. He is steady in his friendships, not hurried, and he does not pick at others' faults. His speech is never empty, so what he says, he means. He keeps wife, children, home, land, relatives and money in their place, even-minded about all of them. In every creature he sees a good that is as much theirs as his own. Sridhara Svami is usually read as taking this last line to mean that he wishes others the welfare he wishes himself. The reason is the question running through this chapter: what binds the self? Krishna has just spoken of the guru and of knowing the self. Here he describes the listener who can take that in. Holding on, pride and envy would turn teaching into one more possession. The verse asks the listener to look honestly at what he calls "mine" and at how he treats others.

A tenant who loves the house he rents. He mends the tap, paints the wall, and welcomes guests, yet he never forgets whose name is on the deed. His care is complete and his grip is light. That is nirmama: full care for home, family and wealth, with no clutching at "mine."

1. Choose one thing you call yours, such as a phone, a chair, or a favourite cup. Today, lend it freely when asked and notice any tightening in you. 2. When someone you know does well, say one warm sentence to them before evening. 3. Before you speak a promise today, ask whether you will keep it. Say only what you will. 4. At night, name one thing you tried to hold too tightly.

A woman sits on the floor of her late father's house while her brother and sister argue over who gets the clock, the land papers and the steel cupboard. Every object has become a verdict on who was loved most. Krishna's list speaks to that moment. First, she can ask what she actually needs, which is the artha he mentions, and what is only hurt asking to be paid back. Second, she can treat the siblings' wants as real, as she treats her own. Third, she can keep the friendship firmer than any object. Ordinary experience bears out that quarrels over things are seldom about the things. Grief makes this harder, and the teaching offers no way around it. The verse does not promise the argument will end, or that the loss will feel smaller. It does not settle who is owed what. A lawyer or an elder may still be needed for that. What it gives is a way to stand in the room without being owned by it.
