The self is other than the body, gross and subtle alike, for it is the one who sees, shining by its own light. As fire is different from the wood it burns, burning it and lighting it up, so the self stands apart. Ending and arising, small and large, the many differences: these are qualities made by the body. The Supreme, having entered within, takes them on as though they were its own.

Three Sanskrit words carry the first half. Sthula and sukshma are the gross body, made of flesh and bone, and the subtle body, the mind and senses working inside it. Svadrk means self-seeing: a seer that needs no other light to be known. Krishna says this seer is different in kind from both bodies. His picture is fire and wood. Fire burns the wood and also lights it up, yet fire is not wood. The self likewise reveals the body and the mind without being either. The second half names what gets confused. Birth and ending, small and large, the many differences between one creature and another, are guna-born: they belong to the body and are made by its qualities. Krishna says the self, having entered the body, takes these on, as though they were its own. The commentators read this as taking on by identification, which is why the text's own heading speaks of bondage coming from mistaking the body for oneself. This comes first because Uddhava has asked what binds the self and what frees it. Krishna begins with the diagnosis: the trouble is a mistaken address. Everything after it, the company of the wise and the axe of knowledge, works on that one mistake. What it asks of the listener is to start seeing that the one who watches is not the thing watched.

A tenant lives in a rented house through many seasons. The roof leaks, the walls get repainted, the shutters crack in the heat, and from inside it all feels like the tenant's own wear. But the one looking out of the windows has never been the house. The self is the tenant, and the body and mind are the house.

1. Choose one ordinary day. Each time you catch yourself saying "I am tired", "I am hungry" or "I am old", silently restate it: "the body is tired", "the body is hungry". 2. Do this about five times, and notice what it feels like to be the one who is watching the tiredness. 3. In the evening, sit for two minutes and recall one such moment. Notice whether the watcher itself felt tired, or only the body.

A man sits in a physiotherapy room three weeks after a stroke. His right arm will not lift, and he says to the therapist, "I am finished." Take the verse step by step. First, he is the one who sees the arm fail. That seeing is going on even now, and it has not failed. Second, the weakness, the fear and the shame are things he is watching, and each rises and passes. Third, with that small gap opened, he can do what the therapist asks, one slow lift, without the whole of himself riding on it. The text teaches the self as the seer apart from the body, and says so as its teaching. Ordinary experience adds only this: people speak of "my knee" and "my mood" as things they have, which already hints at someone who has them. The verse does not bring the arm back, remove grief, or replace the therapist and the doctor, whose work is still needed.
