Knowledge Cuts the Bond

Meaning · English
This body is made by the strands of nature, and it belongs to the person. The round of birth and death is bound up with it. Let one know that this bondage of the self is cut by knowledge. So, by inquiry into the Self, which stays within, alone and supreme, and by keeping company with the wise, let one put away, step by step, the habit of taking these things as real.
Krishna uses three words here. Guna is a strand of nature, the qualities that make up body and mind. Samsara is the round of birth, death and wandering, from sam, together, and sri, to flow. Jijnasa is inquiry, the wish to know. Krishna tells Uddhava that the body is built from the gunas and belongs to the person, and that samsara is tied to it. The bond is not a rope laid on the self from outside. It is the taking of the body as oneself. Because the bond is a mistake of this kind, Krishna says knowledge cuts it, where effort or force would not. He then names the method: inquire into the Self that sits within, alone and beyond. Take up that inquiry in the company of the wise. The commentators read this company as a teacher and those who live the teaching. Then put away vastu-buddhi, the sense that body and its world are the real thing, one step at a time. The text's own heading calls this world mithya, which here means it does not hold as the Self, not that it does not exist. The question behind it is why a person who suffers cannot simply leave. Krishna answers that the knot is in the mind, so loosening it is gradual work, done with others.
A man walks all day in a heavy, soaked raincoat and slowly starts to feel the weight as his own body, and the chill as his own nature. When he finally unbuttons the coat and hangs it up, he finds he was never the weight. The coat is the body and its world. The man is the Self within.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and finish the sentence "I am..." ten times in writing, quickly. 2. Look at the list and mark every answer that is a body, a job, a role or a possession. 3. This week, talk for ten minutes with one person you trust as steady and wise. Ask what they think stays the same in them when roles change. 4. Listen without arguing, and notice which answers you keep returning to.
A sergeant hands in his uniform on his last day of service. By evening he sits in his kitchen unsure who he is, because rank, routine and the body he trained all went into that name. Krishna's teaching begins with that unease. He would say the sense of being this role or this body is a habit of taking, and a habit can be examined. First the man names what he has been identifying with. Then he asks quietly what in him watched all of it. Then he talks it over with older people who have passed through the same loss, instead of carrying it alone. Ordinary experience agrees that people steady themselves more easily in good company than in silence. The teaching does not promise the sergeant that grief or loneliness will lift that evening, and it does not replace a doctor or counsellor if low mood stays heavy. It offers a direction of inquiry that Krishna says is slow, taken step by step.
