Meaning · English

The teacher is the lower fire-stick, the student the upper one. The teaching is the rubbing between them, and knowledge is the spark where they meet, bringing happiness. Then an understanding that is clear and wholly pure shakes off the illusion born of the three strands of nature. Having burned those strands, the very ground it rose from, it grows quiet of itself, like a fire with no fuel left.

Krishna takes his picture from the old way of making fire. Two pieces of wood are rubbed together. The lower one is the arani, the fire-stick. Neither stick makes flame alone. The teacher is the lower stick, the student the upper, the teaching is the rubbing, and knowledge is the spark where they meet. The word vidya comes from vid, to know. The commentators read the picture as saying that knowledge is kindled between two people and is not simply handed over. Then he says what the flame does. Maya, from ma, to measure, is the appearance that the guna, the three strands of nature, spin out. A clear and very pure understanding shakes it off. It burns the strands it came out of. Last, it goes quiet by itself, as a fire does when the fuel is spent. Krishna means the flame of understanding goes still, not the self. This answers what verse 10 left open. If bondage comes from taking the body for the self, how does inquiry begin? Krishna's answer is with a teacher, and with a student who rubs against the teaching. He asks Uddhava to be that upper stick.

A piece of camphor is lit on a plate. It burns bright and clean, eats the camphor itself, leaves no ash, and goes out. Understanding burns up the confusion it was lit from, then rests, with nothing left to feed it.

1. Pick one thing you are confused about in your own life, such as a habit, a worry or a relationship, and write it in one plain sentence. 2. This week, ask one person you trust and respect to talk it over with you for ten minutes. Ask questions and do not defend yourself. 3. Afterwards, write down the one sentence that made something click. Notice what it burned away. 4. Thank them. Teaching needs a student who comes back.

A young tailor is on her third day in an old master's shop, a ruined piece of cloth in her hands. She has watched videos and read instructions. Still she cut the sleeve wrong. The master does not take the scissors. He asks her to put her hand on the cloth, and shows her where the grain runs. She cuts again, and this time it is right. The verse reads this way. Krishna says knowledge is lit by friction between a teacher and a student who actually tries, not by one side alone. The tailor's confusion was never a lack of facts. It was a wrong picture in her head, and the master's few words, matched to her own attempt, burned it away. Once she saw the grain, she had no need to keep repeating the rule. Ordinary experience bears this out: what a person explains to us in answer to our own mistake stays with us longer than what we read. The verse does not promise that one conversation ends every confusion, or that a teacher can stand in for a doctor or a trained helper where one is needed.
