Meaning · English
A wandering mendicant should not touch a young woman, not even a wooden figure of one, with his foot. If he touches, he is bound, as the elephant is bound by the body of the she-elephant. The wise man should never go toward a woman, for she is his own death. Like the elephant, he is struck down by other elephants stronger than himself.
The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what he learned from the elephant. Hunters bury a pit and lay a she-elephant, often only a figure of one, over it. The bull comes for her, falls in, and is chained. Rival bulls then attack him while he is helpless. Three words carry the teaching. A bhikshu is one who lives on alms, a renunciant with no home or property. Sanga, from sanj, to stick to, is clinging, the sticking that follows contact. Prajna is steady understanding, so the wise man is the one who has seen how the trap works. The verses go in order. A renunciant should not touch even a wooden woman with his foot, because the figure is enough to wake the craving. Touch binds him, as it binds the elephant. The wise man does not go toward her, because for a man who has given up household life she is the road to his ruin, which is what death means here. Stronger elephants kill the captive, just as stronger powers kill whoever craving has made helpless. The text speaks to a monk under vow, and the danger it names is his own desire, not the woman. It follows the bee and the fly: the avadhuta is listing the ways wanting captures a free man. The commentators read it as a warning about the lure, not a judgement of women. It asks the listener to keep his distance from whatever he cannot touch without being caught.
A man who has given up sugar does not keep the biscuit tin on the kitchen counter. He puts it in another room, on a high shelf, because the nearer it is, the louder it gets. The tin is the wooden she-elephant, and the distance is the wisdom.
1. Tonight, name one thing you know you reach for against your better judgment: a screen, a snack, a person's messages. 2. Move it one step farther away: another room, a closed app, a muted chat. 3. Over the next three days, notice when the pull is strongest. Is it nearer, or only louder when it is in sight? 4. Write down what you found in one line.
A man has stopped drinking, and it is eleven at night. His way home passes the liquor shop with its lit window. He has told himself he will only look. The verse speaks to the moment before the look: the elephant does not fall at the pit, he falls at the first step toward the figure. So the man crosses to the other pavement, or takes a longer road, and decides this before he is tired. Ordinary experience confirms that wanting grows with nearness and with tiredness, and that a plan made at noon holds better than a vow made at the window. The text's own example is a monk and a woman, and the lure there is his own craving, so carrying the teaching to other cravings is a widening, not the text's words. It does not promise the craving will fade, and it does not replace a doctor or a support group for someone whose dependence is real.
