Meaning · English
A wandering renunciant who lives in the forest should never listen to village songs. Let him learn from the deer, bewitched by the hunters' singing and so caught. Rishyashringa, the doe's son, took pleasure in the dancing, the instruments and the songs of women, and he became their plaything, bound to their will.
The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what the deer taught him. Three words carry it. A yati is a renunciant, from yam, to rein in. Grama-gita is village song, the ordinary music of festivals and company, made to please the senses. Vashya means under another's control, from vash, to will. The first clause says that a yati living in the forest should not go to listen to such songs, even once. The second names the teacher. A deer hears the hunter singing, is bewildered by it, and walks into the snare. The third clause gives a human case. Rishyashringa, whose mother was a doe, enjoyed the dance, the instruments and the women's songs, and ended up as their plaything. The point is that the ear lets something in before the mind has agreed to it. The avadhuta has just spoken of the elephant caught through touch and the fish caught through taste. Here the same snare works through sound. It asks the renunciant to notice which sounds can lead him by the hand.
A child is drawing at the table when the ice-cream van's tune comes down the lane. Crayon dropped, she is already at the door. The tune did the pulling, as the hunter's song does for the deer.
1. Today, notice one sound that makes you stop what you are doing and turn toward it: a ringtone, a jingle, a song from a shop. 2. When it comes, wait three breaths before you follow it. Notice whether you wanted it or only heard it. 3. For one hour, work in quiet or with sound you chose beforehand. 4. That evening, recall which sound pulled hardest.
A boy has promised his mother he will study tonight. A wedding band starts up two lanes away, and the drums reach his window. His pen is still in his hand, but his feet are already turning toward the balcony. Ordinary experience confirms that a tune is hard to ignore once it has started. The verse would change the moment in steps. He would first see that the pull came through the ear, before any decision. He would then know where the pull comes from, and so he could close the window before the band comes down the lane, or he could choose to go and listen and come back. The text itself addresses a forest renunciant, so it asks far more than a student's evening does. It does not call music evil, and it does not promise that a person who keeps away from songs will stop wanting them.
