Scripture, water, company, place, time, action, birth, meditation, mantra and purifying rite: these ten feed the gunas. Of them, whatever the wise and the elders praise is the sattvic kind. Whatever they condemn is the dark, tamasic kind. Whatever they pass over without a word is the restless, rajasic kind.
Krishna gives Uddhava a list of ten things that shape a person's inner state. They are what one hears and reads, what one drinks, who one keeps company with, where one lives, when one acts, what one does, the family one is born into, what one meditates on, the words one repeats, and the rites that cleanse. The word he uses for them, guna-hetu, means a cause that feeds a guna, one of the three strands of sattva, rajas and tamas. The word sattvika means clear and steady, and tamasa means dull and heavy. Rajasa means driven and restless. Each of the ten can come in any of the three flavours. A place can calm or cloud the mind, and so can a kind of company. So Krishna gives a test. What the vriddha, the grown or elder ones, praise is sattvic. What they blame is tamasic. What they leave alone, neither praising nor blaming, is rajasic. The commentators take the elders to be those steady in knowledge, so this is not a vote of the crowd. Krishna teaches this just after saying that sattva is the lever for rising above the other two, and a lever needs something to push on. The listener is asked to look at the ten influences in his own days, and to lean on the judgment of people who have walked further.
A traveller reaches a marsh with many paths. Some villagers who have crossed it all their lives point to one path, warn him off another, and shrug at a third. He trusts their praise, blame and shrug over his own guess. The elders are those villagers, and the marsh is the pull of the three gunas.
1. Tonight, write the ten influences on a page: what you read, drink, whom you meet, where you spend time, and so on. 2. Beside each, note one thing from this week that fed it. 3. Think of one person whose steadiness you trust. Ask yourself what they would praise, blame or pass over in your list. 4. Change one item this week, for example one evening's company or one hour of what you read, and notice how your mind feels afterward.
A woman has just moved into a flat in a new city. It is eleven at night, she cannot sleep, and she is deciding whether to answer the neighbour's invitation to a late card game again, or go to bed. Krishna's list would turn her restlessness into a question. Which of the ten is acting on her tonight: the company, the hour, the room, the news she read before bed? Then she could ask what a settled older person she respects would say about each. Her mother might praise the early night and shrug at the cards. Weighing it this way, she may notice that the choice is about what each thing does to her over weeks, not about guilt. Ordinary experience agrees that poor sleep and tense company leave a person short-tempered the next day. The teaching does not promise that the right choice will remove her loneliness or settle her in the city. It also does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness persists. It gives her a way to look, and the text's claim is that clearer influences leave a clearer mind.
