Meaning · English

A person should keep to what is sattvic, so that sattva grows. From that comes dharma, and from dharma comes knowing, until remembrance comes and the wiping away. Fire born of bamboo rubbing on bamboo burns the whole grove, then goes quiet. In the same way the body, born of the three strands rubbing against one another, goes quiet, and its doings with it.

Krishna tells Uddhava how he answered Brahma, speaking as the swan. Four words carry it. Sattva is clarity, from sat, what is. Dharma is what holds a life steady. Jnana is knowing. Smriti is remembering, and apohana is the wiping away of what was wrongly taken to be oneself. The first half is a ladder. A person feeds sattva with food, company, work and habits that are clear and calm. Clarity steadies conduct, steady conduct lets knowing arise, and knowing goes on until the self is remembered and the false identification is wiped off. The commentators read the remembering as the self recalling what it always was. The second half gives a picture. Two bamboos rub in the wind, a spark starts, and the fire consumes the grove that made it. Then it dies, because nothing is left to burn. The strands of nature rub together and produce a body with its busy doings. When knowing is complete, that restlessness burns itself out. This answers the question Brahma could not settle: how can the mind drop its objects when they seem part of it? Krishna does not say to force the mind. He says to grow clarity, and the rest settles of itself. The listener is asked to choose, day by day, what feeds clarity.

A stick of incense is lit once. It burns down on its own, giving off its scent, and nobody needs to blow it out. When the last of it is ash, the burning stops. The fire is the restless play of the strands, the stick is the body and its doings, and the ending comes from within.

1. Tonight, pick one thing that clouds you, such as a late heavy snack or an hour of scrolling, and replace it with something plain: a glass of water, a short walk, or sitting quietly. 2. Tomorrow, eat your first meal at a regular time and notice how your wanting feels by afternoon. 3. For one week, spend ten minutes with someone calm each day, in person or by phone. 4. At night, write one line on which choices left you clearer.

A man stands at the open fridge at eleven at night, not hungry, still stinging from a quarrel at dinner. His hand is already reaching. The verse points to what stands behind that reach. He is tired, the evening was rough, and cravings are loudest when the day has worn him down. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness weakens restraint. So the verse starts earlier. Regular meals, enough sleep and calm company make the evening itself quieter, and the pull at the fridge loses some of its force. Then comes the smaller step: he closes the door, drinks water, sits down, and lets the sting be a sting without feeding it. Over many such evenings he sees more clearly what he wants and what is only noise. The text's own claim goes further. It says clarity grows into knowing, and the restless body-and-mind fire finally burns itself out. That is the text's teaching and is not tested here. The verse does not promise the quarrel will mend or the hurt will vanish in one night. Where eating or sleep has gone badly wrong, a doctor is the right person to see.
