Uddhava asks: people know that sense pleasures are the home of misfortune, yet they enjoy them anyway. How is that, Krishna, like dogs and donkeys? Krishna answers: in a careless person a mistaken idea of "I" takes root in the heart. From it fierce restlessness rises, and from that the mind, ever changing, takes shape.

Uddhava puts a plain puzzle. People can see that pleasures bring grief, and still they reach for them, the way a dog returns to the same bone. Krishna does not answer with a rule. He points to the root. Three words carry the answer. Pramatta means careless or off guard, from a root for being intoxicated, so it is a person not paying attention to who he is. Aham is simply "I". Krishna says the idea of "I" has gone wrong: it has settled on something it is not. Rajas is restless, coloured activity, from a root meaning to colour or stain. Krishna says that once the false "I" is in place, rajas rises fiercely, and from it comes the mind that keeps changing, vaikarika, from vikara, alteration. So the chasing is a symptom. A wrongly placed self wants what it thinks will complete it, even when experience says otherwise. Knowing that pleasure hurts does not help, because the one who knows is not the one who is pulled. This is why the Swan's question, "who are you?", matters here. The commentators read the wrong "I" as taking body and mind to be the self. What the verse asks of the listener is attention to who is doing the wanting.

Spectacles with a thumbprint smeared across one lens. Everything looks hazy and slightly off, so the wearer keeps squinting, moving closer and blaming the world. The smear is the mistaken "I". The squinting and lunging at things is the restless chasing that follows from it.

1. Today, the next time you reach for something you already know will leave you sorry (a third snack, a scroll, a sharp reply), stop for three slow breaths before doing it. 2. In that pause, ask silently, "Who wants this?" Notice whether it is hunger, tiredness, boredom or a wish to be someone. 3. Then do as you choose. Do not argue with yourself. 4. At night, write one line on what the wanting felt like just before it moved you.

A man stands at a wedding buffet with his third plate. He knows what rich food does to his stomach at night. He is tired, the room is loud, and he has already lifted the spoon. Krishna's answer for such a moment is that the pull does not come from ignorance of the facts. It comes from an "I" that has quietly attached itself to the wanting, so that the wanting feels like him. Step by step, the man could see that the urge has risen, ask whose urge it is, and notice that the one who knows about the stomach is still there, watching. The plate may still be eaten, but it is no longer eaten blindly. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and hurry make us act against what we know. The teaching does not promise that the urge will vanish, that heartburn will not come, or that medical advice about food can be ignored. It claims only that the one who looks is not the same as the one who is pulled.
