Why Revulsion Fades
Isha Upanishad 1.6
Meaning · English
One who sees all living things within the Self, and the Self within all living things, feels no shrinking from anyone because of it.
Three words carry it. Bhuta means a being, something that has come to be, from a root meaning to become. Atman is the Self, the inmost being in a person, which the Isha treats as one and the same in everyone. Vijugupsate means to shrink from, to recoil, to want to hide or cast something out. The Isha says the one who keeps seeing, which is what anupashyati suggests, a seeing that goes on and on, holds two sights together. All beings are seen inside the Self. The Self is seen inside every being. From this, the shrinking ends. The reason lies in how recoil works. Disgust, contempt and fear need someone outside me, a stranger set against me. If no being stands wholly outside the Self, nothing is left to push away. The text does not say the seer likes everything or ignores differences. It says the urge to hide from another creature loses its ground. Shankara reads the verse this way: the knower sees his own Self in all, so hatred, which needs a second thing, cannot start. He also takes the verse as the result of knowing, not a mood to be forced. The listener is asked only to see that the recoil rests on a belief in separateness.
A man finds a thorn in his heel, sits down and draws it out. The foot may be dirty and the thorn may hurt, yet he feels no disgust toward the foot, because it is his own. The Isha pictures the seer standing in that same relation to every creature, near or strange.
1. Today, notice one moment of small recoil: a person you avoid on the stairs, a beggar you look past, a coworker whose voice grates. 2. For about one minute, silently say: the same awareness looks out of them that looks out of me. 3. Then do one small ordinary kindness to that person: a greeting, a held door, a real answer. 4. That evening, note whether the recoil was weaker, the same or stronger. Write one line and leave it there.
A volunteer at a night shelter ladles soup for a man who snaps at her and smells of old smoke. She feels her shoulders tighten and her eyes slide away. The verse speaks to that tightening. It names the recoil as the thing to look at, and says the Isha's seer does not have it. Step by step: she notices the pull to turn away; she recalls that the same awareness she calls herself is looking out of him; she meets his eyes and hands the bowl over with the same care as to anyone. Ordinary experience confirms that contempt eases once a stranger becomes someone with a name and a history. Her irritation may rise again tomorrow. The verse does not promise that every encounter becomes pleasant, that hurtful behavior should be accepted, or that she should stay in a place where she is unsafe. It does not replace a doctor or a social worker for the man's needs. It speaks of the inner shrinking, not of what should be done about harm.
