Parasurama Seeks Teaching from Dattatreya
Tripura Rahasya 2.1
The story · English
Having been told to speak, Parasurama, the son of Jamadagni, bowed to the sage Dattatreya, son of Atri. He stood humbly before him and began to ask his question. "Master, lord of teachers, you who know everything and hold a store of mercy. Long ago anger rose in me against the royal families, and it had its reasons. I wiped out the warrior class, even the unborn and the babies at the breast. I did it twenty-one times, and I filled a lake with their blood." He went on. With that blood he satisfied his ancestors, and they were pleased at his devotion. They calmed his anger, and at his father's command he became still.
"But now," Parasurama said, "Rama rules in Ayodhya, and he is Hari himself. Blind with anger and proud of my strength, I went up against him again. In my pride I was thrown down and beaten. I lived, barely, because that gentle protector of the brahmins spared me." Then, he said, a deep weariness came over him. All along the road he grieved in many ways. "By chance I met Samvarta, an avadhuta, a wanderer who owned nothing. He was like a fire hidden under ashes, and I did not know him then. I felt scorched, and he was cool in every limb. Just being near him, I became cool myself."
"I asked him about his own state, and he answered in words sweet as nectar. He drew out the essence of everything, the way you draw the best from a block of sugar, and handed it to me. I could not take hold of it. I was like a beggar trying to touch a queen. So I begged him again. Then he sent me to you. And so I have reached your feet, and they bring such deep happiness, like a blind man finding a crowd of friends. Still I did not understand what Samvarta told me. I heard the whole greatness of Tripura, and how devotion to her grows. That goddess lives always in my heart, in your form. So what do I gain, living like this?"
"Master, please tell me kindly what Samvarta said. Without knowing it, nothing I do feels finished. Everything I do without it looks like a child's play. I have offered many great sacrifices, with large gifts and mountains of food, to the gods led by Indra. But I heard from Samvarta that their reward is small. I see it now: it is little, and it is only pain. Pleasure is not the opposite of pain. Pleasure is small pain, because when pleasure ends, the pain is heavier. And even the highest splendor has this flaw, that death can still reach it. It is the same with my worship of Tripura. To my mind it all feels like play."
"What you have taught," Parasurama said, "must be done in some other way than I have done it. Words differ, and the supports for worship differ, and so it shows up in many forms. How can it be like a sacrifice, whose fruit is false? If a thing is false in itself, how can it equal the true? Yet it must be done every day, and it has no end. I watched Samvarta. He was cool through and through. He had come out from the burning poison of duties. He walked fearless, as if laughing at the world's ways, like an elephant standing in cold water in a forest fire."
"He tasted the nectar of having no duties left. How did he come to this state? And what did he mean by what he told me? Please explain it all, my teacher. A snake called duty and time has swallowed me. Set me free." Saying this, he took Dattatreya's feet and bowed flat on the ground like a falling staff. Seeing Parasurama so, a man ready for freedom, Dattatreya felt pity and began to speak. "Child of Bhrigu, you are fortunate to have such a mind. It is like a boat coming to someone sinking in the sea. A person of good deeds who reaches this point climbs to the most pure place."
"That goddess Tripura is the sky of every heart. To the devotee who has no other refuge, she turns inward and ripens in the heart. Quickly she frees him from the net of death. As long as a person is not firmly free of fear of the ghosts of duty, he has no happiness. He is always as if possessed. People bitten by the snake of duty, their bodies burning with fierce poison, how can good come to them? See the world, stunned by the poison of duty. It is blind and does not know what would help it. It goes on acting wrongly and falls into confusion again. For ages it has been cooked in this terrible sea of poison." Then Dattatreya told a story.
"Some travelers came to the great Vindhya forest, weighed down by hunger. They saw fruits and took them for tinduka fruit. They were really poison fruits, and they ate them. Burning and blind, they searched for a cure. They ate dhatura fruit, thinking it was lime. They went mad, lost the path, and fell into pits. Thorns cut them. Limbs broke. They quarreled and beat one another with fists, stones and sticks. At midnight they reached a city gate, and the guards stopped them. They fought again, and the guards struck them hard. They scattered. Some fell in the moat and crocodiles ate them. Some died in wells. Some were killed. So people die, blinded by the poison of duty. Dattatreya said, "You are fortunate, Bhargava. Inquiry is the root of everything and the first step. Without it, who finds peace? Lack of inquiry is death. The gods win by it, through Vishnu. Inquiry is the seed of the tree of happiness."
