Dattatreya Teaches Parasurama Value of Inquiry
Tripura Rahasya 2.56
The story · English
Dattatreya spoke to Parasurama, the Bhargava, about the one thing that lifts a person above the rest. It is inquiry, he said. A person who stops to look into things stands higher than everyone around him. Through inquiry Brahma became the greatest of makers, and through inquiry Hari is honoured. Through inquiry Shiva became the all-knowing lord. Then he told what happens without it. Rama, the best of the wise, once ran after a deer without thinking, and he fell into a terrible calamity. Later he did stop and think. He bound the ocean with a bridge and marched into Lanka, a city crowded with rakshasas. The same man, he said, met ruin without inquiry and victory with it.
Dattatreya went on. Even Brahma, he said, grew proud and foolish once, and lost his head for it. You have heard this already. Mahadeva gave a boon to an asura without thinking it through. The boon was that whatever the asura touched would turn to ash. Soon Mahadeva himself was afraid of being burned, and he ran. Hari, long ago, killed the wife of Bhrigu without inquiry, and a curse came back on him. It brought him great pain that was almost too much to bear. Gods, rakshasas, men and animals all fall into trouble the same way, he said. He bowed without end to the steady ones whom inquiry never leaves. People who act without thinking are confused everywhere they turn. Those who think first and then act are freed from endless trouble.
Dattatreya said that this lack of inquiry has clung to the world for a very long time. Where it is thick, he asked, how can careful looking grow? Where in a burning desert in summer is there cool water? A mind wrapped in flames of old thoughtlessness cannot simply feel the cool touch of inquiry. It needs a means, and there is only one, greater than all others. That means is the goddess who lives in the lotus of every heart. Without her, how could anyone reach great good? Inquiry is a sun that destroys the thick blind darkness of thoughtlessness, and its root is devotion, the loving worship of that goddess. When she is truly pleased, she becomes inquiry itself, rising like the sun in the sky of the mind.
So, Dattatreya said, worship her. She is Tripura, the supreme goddess, your own self. She is the great queen who lives within everything, made of pure awareness, and gentle. Worship her without pretence, step by step, through a true guru. In that worship too the root is devotion, together with faith that is clear and clean. And the root of that, he said, is hearing her glory. That is why he told Rama of her glory first. That hearing has brought you good fortune, he said, and you are not afraid, because inquiry is the root of well-being. Until it dawns, fear is great, for a mind seized every day by the fault of not inquiring. A man ill with a fever of the humours is afraid even of medicine until his body is cleansed.
Dattatreya said that when supreme inquiry arrives, human life bears fruit. Every birth without it is a barren tree, and only the birth where inquiry lives is a tree that fruits. People who never inquire are like a frog born in a well. It knows nothing else, and whatever happens to it, good or bad, happens in the well and ends there. In the same way people are born pointlessly into the well of the universe. They never find out what is good or bad for their own self, and they are born and die without knowing what would help them. They take pain for pleasure and pleasure for pain, and they are cooked in the fire of rebirth. Even in suffering they will not let go. A donkey kicked a hundred times still trails after the she-donkey. But you, Rama, are a person of inquiry, and you have reached the far shore of sorrow.
