Level Eyes, Quiet Heart

Mahabharata, Santi Parva 192.43

Meaning · English

Using clear judgment, a person should go about the world in this manner: free of sorrow and free of elation, looking on all beings with the same regard, and carrying no ill will and no jealousy.

Three words carry the teaching. Buddhi is the faculty that sees and decides; it comes from budh, to wake up or know. Samadarshana joins sama, level or even, with darshana, seeing: an even way of looking. Asuya is the habit of finding fault in what others have, from a root sense of grudging. Bhishma tells Yudhishthira to move through the world guided by buddhi. Then come the clauses, none dropped. Be without grief. Be without joy, meaning the kind that swings up and down with gain and loss. Look at every creature with the same regard. Hold no malice, which is the wish to harm. Hold no envy, which is the sting at another's good luck. The reason he gives comes from the verses before: a wise person moves among creatures untouched, as a water bird is not wet. Yudhishthira has won a kingdom and feels only sorrow. Bhishma offers him a way to live where neither loss nor another's fortune pulls him around. Envy needs a ranking in which some people stand above others. Level seeing removes the ranking, and the envy has nothing to stand on. The text does not ask him to feel nothing. It asks that judgment, not reaction, steer him.

Picture a surveyor's spirit level laid on a table. The bubble sits in the middle whether the table is in a palace or a shed. It does not care whose table it is. Even regard works that way: the mind stays centered, and the other person's good fortune cannot tilt it.

1. Tonight, recall one person whose luck you noticed this week, such as a raise, a house, or a happy family. 2. Sit for two minutes and say quietly, "May this be good for them." Watch where in your body the sting sits, and just note it. 3. Tomorrow, when you hear someone's good news, pause one breath before answering. Notice whether your face and voice are level, then answer plainly.
