The One Cause
Mahabharata, Santi Parva 200.5
Meaning · English
It enters everything and does everything. It is present in the world just as the sacred texts say. It is the cause of all, higher than the highest, one without a second, and the doer of all that is done.
Bhishma is naming the cause behind all things. Three ideas carry it. Sarva-vyapi means pervading everything: what he points to is inside each creature and each event, not off to one side. Parama means highest, and the verse calls this cause higher than the highest, so nothing ranks above it. Ekam advitiyam means one without a second: there is no rival power, no second source. Now the clauses. It enters everything. It does everything, acting through the forms of living creatures. It exists in the world as the mantras describe. It is the cause of all. It is the highest of the high. It is one, and it does all that is done. Bhishma speaks to Yudhishthira, who has won a kingdom and is sick at heart over what it cost. Bhishma is teaching him what lies behind action, so that he stops seeing himself, or anyone else, as the final author of outcomes. For a reader troubled by envy, the text's reasoning runs this way. If one source acts through every creature, another person's good fortune is not a prize taken from you. Nilakantha reads the cause here as the Self, the one consciousness behind every act.
Picture a single lamp in a hall of many windows, each window glowing. Someone outside may think each window has its own fire and that one is brighter. Inside, one flame lights them all. The windows are creatures and their fortunes. The flame is the one cause the verse names.
1. Tonight, think of one person whose luck you quietly resent. Sit for two minutes and picture them as one more window lit by the same flame as you. 2. Tomorrow, when you notice a flash of envy, stop and name it silently: "that is the one cause at work in them." 3. This week, say a plain word of congratulation to someone doing well. Notice what your mind does as you say it.
