Long ago, in the city of Videha, there lived a woman named Pingala, a courtesan. Something small was learned from her, and the avadhuta now offers it to the king. Listen closely, dear son of kings, and take in what I learned from her.

The avadhuta, in Krishna's retelling, is speaking to King Yadu. He has just finished with the fish and now starts on a new teacher. Her name is Pingala, and she is a veshya, a courtesan, a woman who earned her living from men who paid to visit her. The city is Videha, and the avadhuta says it was long ago, so this is an old story he is pulling out of memory. The verse is an introduction, and two small choices in it matter. First, he says he learned only kinchit, a little, from her. He does not claim she gave him a whole philosophy. She gave him one thing, and it is enough to carry. Second, he tells Yadu to nibodha, which is a word for listening closely, as when you want to understand and not just hear. It is the same word a teacher uses when something is about to be said that is easy to pass over. The reason for this verse is the avadhuta's whole method. Over twenty-four teachers he has been showing that wisdom does not stay inside respectable places. The earth, the fish, the deer taught him. Now a woman whom many would look past teaches him as well. He does not describe her as a warning. He names her plainly and treats her as a teacher. He also calls Yadu a prince, the son of kings. A king is used to being taught by priests and ministers. The avadhuta is asking him to take instruction from a story about someone far outside his own world, and to listen as carefully as he would to anyone.

A traveler lost at dusk passes the signpost and asks the woman sweeping her doorstep, because she has walked that road every day. The avadhuta takes the same turn: he asks the person who has lived the road, not the one with the title.

1. Today, think of one person you tend to dismiss, perhaps a neighbor, a cleaner, or a relative you find tiresome. 2. Spend ten minutes with them, or recall one thing they have said or done. 3. Ask yourself quietly: what do they know that I do not? 4. Write down one small thing, only one, and keep it.

A new hospital attendant stands in a corridor at three in the morning beside a frightened patient. The doctors have gone, and the sweeper, who has worked those wards for twenty years, sits down and speaks to the patient in a low voice. The patient settles. The attendant watches, and the avadhuta's opening would change what he does next. He would not decide beforehand who is allowed to teach him. He would watch what the sweeper does and keep it. Ordinary experience confirms how easily we give our ear to titles and withhold it from people we have already filed away. The verse asks the opposite. It does not ask us to admire everyone or to copy every life. It claims only that a small, true lesson can sit in an unlikely person, and that finding it takes close listening. The verse does not say every teacher is equally reliable, and it does not remove the need for proper training where training matters. A sweeper's calm is no substitute for a physician's treatment. It promises one thing only: attention paid without prejudice may turn up something worth keeping.
