The mind goes into the objects of the senses, and the objects go into the mind. Master, how can the two ever be given up, each from the other, by one who longs to be free and wants to cross to the far shore?

This is a question, not an answer. The four sages, Sanaka and his brothers, put it to their father Brahma, and Krishna repeats it to Uddhava. Three words carry it. Guna means a strand or quality. Here it means the things the senses meet, sounds, sights, tastes, all made of nature's strands. Cetas is the mind, from cit, to be aware. It is the part of us that notices and remembers. Mumukshu is one who wants release, from muc, to let go. The sages add a second word, atititirshu, one who wishes to cross over, from tri, to cross, like a person standing at a river's edge. The first line states the trouble. The mind pours itself into what it sees and tastes. What it has seen and tasted then settles inside it, as memory and wanting. Each is in the other. The second line asks the obvious thing. If they are tangled like this, how can anyone who wants to be free pull them apart? Where would the pulling hand even stand? Krishna tells this so Uddhava will see why the swan's answer was needed. Brahma, the first teacher, sat with the question and could not find where it began. The commentators take the sages' doubt to be a real one, not a trick. The verse asks nothing of the listener yet, except to feel how stuck the problem is before the answer arrives.

A sponge sits in a basin of water. The water is inside every pore of the sponge, and the sponge sits inside the water. Ask which one to remove first and you cannot say. The mind is the sponge, the world of sights and tastes is the water, and the sages ask how to separate them.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you saw today that kept coming back, a face, an ad, a remark. 2. Sit for two minutes and let it replay without pushing it away. 3. Ask: is this thing in front of me now, or only in my mind? 4. Notice how a thing that is gone can still sit inside you. Stop there. Do not try to fix it.

A woman lies awake after an argument with her brother. He is not in the room. The phone is face down. Yet she hears his voice, his exact words, and her own replies she wishes she had made. The quarrel has moved from the kitchen into her head, and her head keeps feeding it back to her. The sages' question fits this moment. The object is gone, yet it is inside the mind, and the mind keeps entering it. She might first see that what she is hearing is a replay, not her brother. Next she might see that she has been standing in the replay for an hour. Naming the knot comes first, and the verse stops there. Krishna's answer comes later in the telling. Ordinary experience agrees that a scene seen once can run for hours and that tiredness makes it louder. The verse does not promise sleep or peace that night. If sleeplessness or dread keeps returning for weeks, a doctor should be seen.
