When Sita had finished speaking, the rakshasa king pressed his hands together for a moment. Then, before her startled eyes, he grew to his true size. 'You have not understood my power,' he said. 'I can stand in the open air. I can lift the earth in these arms, drink the ocean dry and defy Death himself. I can pierce the sun with an arrow and split the earth to its depths. I take whatever shape I please.' His eyes burned red. The gentle hermit's clothes were gone. In their place stood a figure as dark and dreadful as the god who rules the dead. He had ten faces and twenty arms, his limbs were hung with gold, and his robes were crimson. He looked at her, bright as the dawn, and spoke again.

'If you want a husband whose fame is known in every world, look kindly on me,' Ravana said. 'Spend happy years with me, and you will never regret it. Nothing I do will ever displease you. Give up this mortal man. What holds you to Rama, thrown out of his own kingdom? Bad luck follows him, and his days are nearly done. A woman spoke one word, and he gave up his home, his kingdom and his friends to live in a forest full of wild beasts.' Then he came closer. He seized her hair with one hand and her body with another. The gods of the woods saw his huge teeth and mountainous shape, and they fled. His magic chariot appeared, blazing with gold and drawn by asses, and he set her in it.

He scolded her harshly, but nothing could stop her crying out Rama's name, though Rama was far away. Then Ravana rose into the sky with her, the way an eagle carries off a snake. 'Lakshmana,' she called, 'you always do your brother's will. Can you not see this? This creature of a hundred disguises is tearing me from Rama's side.' Then she turned on Ravana. 'The bitter fruit of a crime does not always come at once, but it comes, the way grain ripens for the harvest. You will die by Rama's hand for this, and it will be a dreadful death.' And she grieved, 'Kaikeyi and her friends have everything they wanted now, with Rama left to mourn his stolen wife.'

Then she said goodbye to everything she knew. 'Goodbye, glades of Janasthana, and the bright Cassia trees. Tell Rama that Ravana is taking his wife. Goodbye, Godavari, with all your water-birds. Tell him what has happened to me. Gods of this place, birds and deer, all of you, I beg you, tell Rama I have been carried off. If he knew I were in hell itself, he would bring me back today, even from Yama.' As she wept, she saw a vulture on a tall tree. 'Dear bird,' she said faintly, 'Ravana, king of the giants, is carrying me away. You cannot stop him. He is armed and strong. But do one thing for me. Tell Rama how Sita was taken, and tell brave Lakshmana too.'

The vulture woke from his sleep and heard her. He looked up at her, and at the giant who held her. Tall as a mountain peak, he spoke from the tree. 'Ten-necked lord, I keep to the old laws, and you, my brother, should keep away from shameful deeds. I am Jatayu, king of the vultures. The woman you hold is Sita, wife of Rama, Dasharatha's heir, who cares for the good of all. No king may touch another man's wife, and a prince's wife least of all. Turn back to earth. People look to their king and follow him. If your mind bends toward sin, how will you keep your throne? Rama never wronged you. Khara went after him because Shurpanakha asked him to, and Khara fell. That was his fault, not Rama's.'

'Let her go in peace,' Jatayu went on, 'or Rama's anger will burn you, as Indra's lightning struck down Vritra. You are taking a poisonous snake to your heart. A sensible man does not lift a weight he cannot carry. Son of Pulastya, I have lived sixty thousand years and ruled my kind all that time. I am old. You are young, in shining armour, with a bow and arrows. I have no power to kill you, and the princes are far away. But you will not take her past me without a fight. Whatever the pain, even if it costs my life, Rama's will must be done. Stay, Ravana. Hold your chariot for one hour, and you will fall from it like fruit from a shaken branch.'

Ravana's red eyes rolled, and he rushed at the bird. They met like two storm clouds, like two winged mountains crashing in the sky. Arrows rained on Jatayu's breast and wings, but he bore them and tore Ravana's body with his beak and talons. Ravana set ten arrows on his string and drew it to his ear, and every arrow went in. Jatayu looked once at Sita weeping in the chariot. Then, heedless of his wounds, he attacked again. He snapped the jewelled bow in his talons. Ravana took up a second bow and loosed thousands of arrows. Jatayu shook them off and broke that bow too. His wing split the giant's armour. He struck down the goblin-faced asses and smashed the golden chariot. He brought down the men who held the royal parasol, and he tore the driver's face. Ravana leapt to the ground holding Sita, and the watching spirits cried, 'Well done.'

But Jatayu was very old, and his strength was going. Ravana rose into the air again with Sita, still holding his sword. Once more Jatayu lifted from the ground and hung in his path. 'You will ruin your whole race,' he said. 'You are drinking poison like a thirsty traveller. You are a fish who finds the hook too late. Raghu's sons will never let this go. This is a thief's deed, not a chief's. Stay and fight, and you will fall as Khara fell.' Then he dropped onto Ravana's back. His talons went down to the bone. His beak held fast, and he tore at the king's long hair. Ravana, shaking with rage, struck at him with his hand. Jatayu ripped away his ten left arms, and ten new arms grew in their place, sliding out like serpents from a hillside.

Ravana pressed Sita close and hit back with fists and feet, and the bird fought on, out of his love for Rama. Then Ravana took his sword and cut Jatayu at the wings, the side, the feet and the throat. The vulture fell, bleeding, with his life almost gone. His breast was grey, like ashes where a fire has died. Sita ran to him as if a kinsman were dying. She put her arms around his neck and wept. 'Rama, you could not see this coming,' she said. 'This royal bird came to help me out of pity, and he has died for my sake. Rama, Lakshmana, why are you so slow?' She clung to the trees and screamed. Ravana caught her by the braid. The sun went dark, the wind fell still, and the Eternal Father of the sky said, 'The deed is done, as it was decreed long ago.'

The sages in the woods wept for her, yet they were glad too, because Ravana's life would pay for this. Then he carried her up again, and she called to Rama and Lakshmana all the way. Her amber silk streamed around him like fire round a dark mountain. Lotus petals from her garland fell on his head, an anklet slipped from her foot and flashed down into the valley, and her jewels dropped to earth like fallen stars. The trees bowed and said, 'Be comforted.' Lions, tigers and deer ran after her shadow. The hills wept their waterfalls, and the sun grew pale. 'If Ravana escapes with her,' the spirits cried, 'justice and truth are gone.' Sita looked down for a friend. She saw no one, not Rama, not Lakshmana, and she fainted with fear and pain.
