When Sita understood that the giant had carried her up into the sky, grief and fear crushed her. Fresh tears filled her reddened eyes, and she turned on Ravana. "How can you do something this low and feel no shame? You stole me from my home when there was no one near to protect me. You were too frightened of a warrior's blows to fight, so you sent a magic deer to lure my husband away. The vulture king, his father's old friend, lies on the ground with his wing torn, because he gave his old life trying to free me. What great courage you have, the meanest of your whole line. You told me your name, and then you won a fight against a woman. Every world will hear of this. Shame on your valour. Your whole race will bleed for it."

"You fly faster than the wind, but stay one hour, Ravana, and you will not leave alive. The moment the two princes see you, all your legions will not save you, any more than birds can stand against a forest fire. Let me go, and spare yourself what is coming. If I never see my husband again, I will die rather than live as your captive. You are like a sick man who reaches for the food that will kill him and turns away from the medicine. Death's noose is already around your neck. Soon you will see the golden trees, the river Vaitarani running with blood, the forest where every leaf is a sword. My lord alone killed fourteen thousand of your fiends in the blink of an eye. Will he spare the man who stole his wife?" Then she wept until she hardly knew what she was saying, and still he flew on, holding her as she shook with despair.

He carried her on, and no friend appeared anywhere below. Then, on a hilltop rising above the forest, she saw five monkeys standing together. She pulled the bright scarf from her neck and let it fall, and after it her earrings, her necklace, her chains and gems, dropping down among them. "These may show my path," she thought, "and tell my lord which way I have gone." Ravana, in his wild hurry, never noticed her taking the gold from her neck and arms and feet and sending each piece down to the earth. The monkeys looked up with their tawny eyes, too astonished even to blink, and saw the dark-eyed lady crying out above them. Then the giant passed high over their heads, holding her fast, and was gone.

He crossed the shining waters of Pampa and sped on toward Lanka, carrying in his foolish joy the prize that would destroy him, like a man who hides a poisonous snake under his robe. Swift as an arrow he flew over woods and rocks and lakes, and then over the roaring sea, where monstrous creatures roam, the ancient kingdom of Varuna. The waves rose and tossed, and fish and serpents flashed their fins and crests. From the sky came the voices of the blessed ones: "Ten-necked King, listen. This deed will be your end." But he came down in Lanka, a bright, rich city of orderly streets and crowded squares, and went into his palace. There he placed Sita in a queen's chamber and turned to the fearsome she-fiends who filled the hall. "Guard her. No man or woman may see her. Give her anything she asks for, pearls, clothes, gold, as if I asked it myself. And whoever upsets her with a single word, on purpose or by carelessness, has thrown her life away."

Then, turning over what to do next, Ravana left the chamber. He found eight giants, strong and terrible, who fed on bleeding flesh and trusted in a boon from Brahma to keep them safe. "Arm yourselves with spear and bow," he told them, "and leave Lanka at once. Janasthana is ours no longer. It is soaked in giants' blood. Khara's seat lies empty. That whole great host, led by Dushana and Khara, fell to Rama's arrows. My anger has no limit, and nothing will satisfy it but Rama's death. I will not sleep until I have killed him with my own hand. Go and live in Janasthana. Watch Rama closely and report everything he does. Be brave, quick and careful, and work for one thing only, to help me kill him. I have seen your strength in battle, and that is why I send you." The eight bowed their heads to their master and left through Lanka's gate at once, moving fast and unseen.

Pleased that he had guarded against every danger, Ravana thought of Sita again with a heart burning for her, and hurried back to her room. He found her weeping among the she-fiends who watched her, crushed by a grief too heavy to carry, like a small boat sinking in a storm, like a lone deer left by its herd with hungry dogs closing in. Her eyes were cast down and streaming. He ordered her to stand, and then he led her through his whole palace. He showed her the halls where a thousand women lived, the gold-covered buildings, the birds of every kind, pillars set with diamond and lapis, ivory, crystal, silver and gold. Drums sounded everywhere. He took her up stairs of gold, past lattices of silver and ivory, and out into gardens bright as lightning, with pools full of flowers. Through all of it she walked lost in grief.

Then, hoping all this splendour had stirred some longing in her, he spoke. "Three hundred million giants obey me, and a thousand of the best wait on me. All this power I lay at your feet, and my life with it. A thousand beauties fill my halls. Be my wife and rule them all. This island stretches a hundred leagues, ringed by the ocean, and not even the gods led by the lord of the sky could take it. No one in any world is my equal. Why waste yourself on Rama, a man thrown out of his kingdom, walking on foot, with few days left to him? Do not hope for one hour to see his face again. Who could tie up the wind in a net or hold a flame in his hand? Nobody could take you from this island. Be queen of Lanka. Ride with me in the chariot I won from my brother, the Lord of Gold, bright as the sun and swift as thought. But sorrow has clouded your lovely face."

Sita pressed a corner of her garment to her cheek and wiped away a tear. Seeing her stand there dazed, trying to gather her thoughts, he pleaded again. "Do not think of broken vows or fear any blame. The sages approve such a marriage. I lay my heads at your feet and beg you. One kind word, one look, for your slave lying here. These are foolish words, forced out of me by love. Let no one ever say Ravana courted a woman with his head on the ground." And he thought, "She is mine now," already caught in Death's noose. Sita heard him, weighed down with sorrow but not shaken. She put her fear aside and answered with scorn. "Dasharatha was a king who never broke his word. His eldest son is Rama, a friend of all that is right, known in every world, long-armed, wide-eyed, my husband and my god. With his brother Lakshmana he will strike you down. If you had dared touch me in front of him, you would be lying dead in Janasthana beside Khara."

"Your night-roaming warriors will be like serpents when the king of birds swoops down. Rama's golden arrows will tear through you the way the Ganga eats away its banks. Neither god nor demon can kill you, they say, but he will. One furious look from him would burn you up, as Rudra's eye burned up Kama. A man who could bring down the moon or drain the sea will come for his Sita. Lanka will be widowed by your crime. My husband lives without fear in the Dandaka forest with his brother, and his arrows will drain the pride from your bleeding body. Could an outcaste's step defile an altar made ready for the sacred rite? Could the white swan beside her mate glance at a waterbird in the grass? This body is yours to chain or wound or kill. I will not cling to life. But no one will ever join Sita's name to shame."

Every hair on the giant bristled with anger. "Listen to me, lady," he said, with fury in his eyes. "If twelve months pass and you still refuse me, my cooks will cut up your flesh and serve it for my breakfast." Then he called the hideous she-fiends who eat the flesh of men. "Take her, and break her pride." They raised their hands to their king and closed around Sita in a ring. Stamping so hard the ground shook, he said, "Take her to the Ashoka garden and guard her there until threats and sweet words together bend her will. Watch her well, and tame her like a wild she-elephant." They led her to that garden, where the sweetest flowers scented the air, the trees hung with rare fruit, and the birds never stopped singing. There, ringed by the cruel giantesses like a lone deer among hungry tigresses, Sita lay like a wild creature newly caught, with no comfort anywhere. She could not forget a single threat, or the fierce eyes fixed on her. She thought of Rama, far away, and grieved for Lakshmana, and lay on the ground half fainting with sorrow and fear.
