Meaning · English

Surely the Lord Vishnu is pleased with me, for some deed of mine. This disgust has come to me, a woman of wrong hopes, and it brings happiness. Sorrows like these would not come to an unlucky woman as causes of disgust, for by disgust a person cuts the bond and reaches peace. I take that kindness on my head. I give up the wrong hopes that tied me to worldly company, and I go for refuge to that Lord, the master of all. Content, trusting in this, living on whatever comes, I will take my delight with this very Self, my true beloved.

Pingala speaks to herself, in the avadhuta's account to King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling. She has waited all night for a lover who never came, and she turns the night around. Three words carry it. Nirveda is disgust or weariness with what once pulled at you, from a root meaning to find out, to come to know. Durasha is a wrong hope: asha is hope, and dur marks it as hard to satisfy and bound to hurt. Ramana means the one in whom you rest and delight. She will call the Self by that name. Now the clauses. First she says Vishnu must be pleased with her, since this weariness has come, and it brings happiness. Second, she says that sorrows do not become causes of disgust for the unlucky. A person who is truly shut out of grace stays hooked. Disgust is how a person cuts the bond and reaches peace. Third, she takes the gift on her head, as one accepts a blessing. She drops the hopes that tied her to worldly company and goes to Vishnu for refuge. Fourth, she is content, trusting, and lives on whatever comes, taking her delight in the Self. She says all this because her night of waiting was the very pain that opened her eyes. The question underneath is whether suffering is only loss. Her answer is that it can be a kindness. Sridhara Svami reads her weariness as the grace itself, the sign that Vishnu is pleased. The text asks the listener to notice what a failed hope has loosened, and to turn toward refuge.

A man pushes a stuck door all night, shoulder aching, and at dawn finally sees the other door standing open behind him. The long pushing is the ache of false hope, and turning round is nirveda, the weariness that finally lets her see where rest was waiting.

1. Tonight, notice one thing you keep waiting for: a message, a reply, an approval. Name it silently. 2. Ask yourself how much of your evening it has taken. 3. Put the phone in another room for twenty minutes and sit with a cup of tea or water. 4. Before sleep, say one sentence of thanks for something this wait has shown you, even if small. 5. Tomorrow, eat and work on what is in front of you, as it comes.

A man sits on the sofa at one in the morning, refreshing his inbox for a reply from a friend who has drifted away. He knows the answer is probably no. He keeps checking anyway. Pingala's turn would change the moment in steps. First, she names the hope as the thing that is hurting, rather than blaming herself for being unlucky. Second, she treats the ache as information: this hope has cost more than it gave. Third, she puts it down and goes to refuge, and then lives on what the day brings. For the man, that means closing the inbox and going to bed. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind clings harder to a hope and judges worse the next morning, so rest is the sensible place to begin. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the friend returns, that the loneliness lifts, or that grief ends. Where low mood or sleeplessness lasts for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see. The text offers a turning point, and the peace it names comes after the turning.
