Meaning · English
I have fallen into the well of worldly life. The senses have robbed me of my sight, and the serpent of time has swallowed me whole. Who but the Lord can save a self like this? The self alone is the guardian of the self, once it has grown weary of everything. Awake and watchful, it should see this whole world as swallowed by the serpent of time.
Pingala, speaking to herself, gives her situation three pictures. She has fallen into a well, which is samsara, the round of birth, wanting and loss. Her eyes have been robbed by the senses, because pleasures held her gaze until she could not see where she stood. And kala, time, a serpent, has already swallowed her. Then she asks who but the Lord has the power to pull her out. She has just tried every human helper, and none could. The second half turns inward. The self is its own guardian, but only when nirveda has come: a weariness with all of it, the colour gone out of the chase. Then she asks for apramatta, being awake and unheedless, so that she sees the whole world as already in the serpent's mouth. The commentators differ on whether the guardian self is one's own awareness or the Lord within, and both readings are old. The reason for the lesson is that Pingala has just given up waiting for a lover. This is what she turns to afterward. When no person can rescue her, she looks to the Lord and to the Self. The avadhuta tells it to Yadu as a teaching about where rescue can come from.
A man stands in a dry well at dusk, staring up at a small circle of sky. He calls out for passersby, but they only wave and walk on. Then he notices the rope hanging beside him. The well is worldly life, the passersby are lovers and pleasures, and the rope is the Self within.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you keep waiting on: a message, a reply, someone's approval. Write it on a scrap of paper. 2. Sit for five minutes and notice how much of the day it has taken. 3. Then look at the clock and say aloud that this hour will not come again. 4. Fold the paper, put it away, and spend the next ten minutes on one small task that is wholly yours.
A man is up at one in the morning, three hours into a shopping app. He is not buying anything. He is tired and cannot stop. His eyes are on the screen, yet he could not say what he has seen. The verse speaks to him step by step. First comes the plain admission that the senses have taken his attention and left him less awake than before. Then comes the weariness, the moment he thinks, I am done with this, and that is what the text calls the beginning of self-rescue. Then he notices the clock, and the night going by. He puts the phone face down, drinks some water and goes to bed. The text offers only that: the watching self is his own guardian, and the Lord is the one it turns toward. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired person chases hardest and sees least. The verse does not promise that the craving will not return tomorrow night. It does not treat poor sleep, low mood or compulsive habits that have taken hold. Where those are present, a doctor is the right person to see.
