The avadhuta tells King Yadu: holding on brings pain to people, and so does clinging to whatever is dearest to them. The one who knows this and owns nothing finds happiness without end. Stronger birds attacked an osprey that was carrying a piece of meat, while birds with no meat were left alone. The osprey let the meat go, and then it found happiness.

Krishna retells the avadhuta's lesson from the osprey. Two words carry it. Parigraha is gathering and holding, from pari (all around) and grah (to seize): the grip itself, not only the object. Akinchana means one who has nothing at all of his own, from a-kinchana, not even a little something. The avadhuta says that holding brings pain, and that whatever people love most becomes the heaviest thing to hold. Then he gives a picture. An osprey flies with meat in its beak. Stronger birds go after it, since the meat is what they want. Birds carrying nothing are not chased. The osprey drops the meat, the attackers leave it alone, and it finds ease. The pursuit was never about the osprey. It was about what it carried. The avadhuta is answering Yadu's question about how he can be so light and content, and this is his answer: he took the osprey's way. For the listener, the teaching asks a quiet question. What am I carrying that others, or my own fear, keep circling? Sridhara Svami reads the owning of nothing as the knower's freedom from possessiveness, not mere poverty.

A man walks home from the bank with a thick envelope of cash, glancing at every stranger, tense at each footstep. Once the envelope is deposited, he strolls with empty hands. The envelope is the possession; the glancing and the tension are the pain it brings.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you keep worrying about losing, such as a gadget, a title or a grudge. Hold it in mind for two minutes. 2. Ask: what does guarding this cost me each day, in attention and tension? 3. Say to yourself, quietly, that you could set it down for one hour. Then put the object away, or silence the thought, for that hour. 4. Notice whether your shoulders, breath or mind loosen.

A shopkeeper arrives on the morning the rent is due. His mind is on the cash drawer, the lock, the neighbour who owes him, and the supplier who may raise prices. Each worry attaches to something he holds. He opens the shop, but part of him stays behind guarding the things themselves. The teaching, as the avadhuta gives it, would change that moment in steps. He would first notice which worry belongs to a real duty, like paying the rent, and which belongs to the grip, like fretting over a rival's bigger sign. Then he would put down the second kind. The first still gets done. Ordinary experience agrees that guarding many things leaves little attention for the day itself. The text does not say he must give away his shop, and it does not promise the rent will be paid or that loss will not hurt. It teaches that the clinging adds a second pain on top of the first, and that this second pain can be dropped.
