Honor and insult do not touch me. I carry no worry for house or children. I play in the Self, I delight in the Self, and I wander here like a child. Only two are free of worry and bathed in supreme joy: the child who is wholly unknowing, and the one who has gone beyond the three gunas.

The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, that the child is one of his teachers. Three words carry the lesson. Mana and apamana are honor and insult, the praise people give and the slight they withhold. Cinta is worry, from cit, to think: the mind going round and round a thing. Guna means a strand or quality of nature; the three strands are what bind the mind to likes, dislikes and restlessness. He says honor and insult do not reach him, and he carries no worry for house and children. He plays in the Self and delights in the Self, so his joy needs no outside supplier. He wanders like a child. Then he names two kinds of people who are free of worry and bathed in joy: the child, who is simply innocent, and the one who has gone past the gunas. The commentators note that the child is free by not yet knowing, the sage by having come through. The teaching answers a plain question: what does being unburdened look like? The avadhuta points to a child, who does not keep accounts of status or fret over tomorrow. The text asks the listener to see that freedom from worry is real, and to notice where honor and anxiety are being carried.

A small child sits in the dust building a mound of pebbles. Someone walks past and laughs, someone else praises it, and the child hardly looks up, because the play itself is the whole reward. The avadhuta's inner delight is like that, needing no audience to complete it.

1. Tonight, take two minutes and name one worry you have been carrying about a person or a thing you cannot settle before morning. 2. Say aloud, quietly, what part of it is yours to do tomorrow, and leave the rest. 3. Tomorrow, when someone praises or slights you, wait three breaths before you answer. Notice how much of the sting or the glow is still there afterward. 4. Spend ten minutes doing something only because you like it, with no one to see it.

A man sits at the back of a community hall as the award he hoped for goes to someone else. His name is not called. His chest tightens, and his mind starts drafting remarks about how overlooked he is and what the others must think of him. The verse shifts that moment in steps. First, the sting is seen as honor and insult working on him, not as a fact about his worth. Second, the worry about what others will say is put down for the moment, as a child puts down a toy when called to eat. Third, he turns his attention to something present and simple, such as the music, the tea, or a friend beside him. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind occupied with play has little room for reputation. The verse does not promise that disappointment will not hurt, or that grief or a real wrong needs no response. It does not replace practical care for a family, or a doctor where one is needed. Its claim is narrower: the avadhuta, as Krishna retells him, says that joy found in the Self does not rise and fall with praise.
