No Freedom, No Lasting Pleasure

Even there, the doer is seen to be unfree in his actions. And the one who feels pleasure and pain, being helpless, what does he gain by seeking? No embodied being has any happiness at all, not even the learned. In the same way, suffering belongs to the deluded. The main thing is vain egoism, the empty claim of being the maker.

Three words carry it. Asvatantrya is lack of self-rule: a, not; sva, own; tantra, governing. Vivasha is helplessness, being under another's will; vasha means command or control. Ahankara is the I-maker: aham, I, and kara, making. Krishna tells Uddhava that the doer is seen to be unfree in his deeds. Results arrive through body, time and many causes, never through his wish alone. The one who feels pleasure and pain is carried along too, so Krishna asks what he gains by chasing one and fleeing the other, helpless as he is. Then comes the harder claim. In the sense Krishna means, the pleasure that comes to an embodied being through body and objects is no real happiness, even for the learned. Suffering belongs to the deluded, and above all stands empty self-assertion: the claim 'I am the one doing this, I am the one enjoying it.' The text's own heading names the root: the self takes the body for itself, and bondage follows. Uddhava has asked what binds the self, so Krishna begins by taking apart the belief in one's own control and in pleasure that lasts. He asks Uddhava to see how little he rules, and how briefly a pleasure stays.

A small child on the back seat of a car holds a toy steering wheel clipped to the seat in front. He turns it hard, certain he is driving. The road, the engine and the driver go on without him. The doer who says 'I am making this happen' is that child.

1. Tonight, write down three things that went well today. Beside each, list the other people and conditions that made it possible. 2. Tomorrow, when something pleasant comes, such as a cup of tea or a kind word, notice how many minutes pass before your attention moves on. 3. Once during the day, before saying 'I did it', pause for one breath and ask what else was at work.

A man has just got the keys to the flat he saved fifteen years for. On the first night he sits on the bare floor with a plate of takeaway food and waits to feel triumphant. What he feels is tired, and a little flat. Then he starts thinking of the curtains and the loan. The verse speaks to exactly this. First, Krishna's teaching says the 'I did it' was never the whole story: the loan approval, the timing, the help of others and his own health all carried him. That loosens pride and leaves room for thanks. Second, it says pleasure through body and objects does not stay, and ordinary experience agrees that a long-wanted thing soon feels ordinary. He can let the evening be a modest good without asking it to be more. The limit is plain. The verse does not clear the debt, ease the worry about the future, or promise that he will feel joyful. It only changes what he expects the flat to give him.
