Even Knowing Cannot Stop Death

Bhagavata Purana 11.10.19

Suppose some people do know how to gain pleasure and how to ward off pain. Even they do not know the way by which death could be kept from coming. What good is any object, or any desire, that gives a man joy when death is near? To one being led off to execution, nothing offered brings contentment.

Krishna is pressing a point about skill. Someone may object that the wise at least know how to get happiness and avoid pain. Krishna grants it for a moment, then shows the gap. Even those people, he says, do not know the method by which death would fail to reach them. The word he uses for that method is yoga, here meaning a means or device, a way of working something out. It is not the discipline of the same name. The second word is kama, desire, from kam, to long for. It is the pull toward an object because you expect it to please you. Krishna asks what good an object or a desire can do for a person when death stands close. He answers with a picture: a man being led to execution. Offer him food, music or praise and none of it satisfies him, because his mind is on where he is going. Krishna teaches this to Uddhava to answer a question underneath all the others: is there any lasting footing in getting what you want? Sridhara Svami reads the verse as showing that cleverness at managing pleasure and pain leaves the real problem untouched. What it asks of the listener is honesty. Every life is already walking toward that place, so the weight placed on desire's gifts is worth measuring against it.

A man is walking to the gallows and a stranger offers him a sweet. He holds it and cannot taste it. The sweet is every pleasure we chase, and the walk is the life we are already on.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you have been wanting this week: a purchase, a bit of praise, a result. 2. Sit for two minutes and ask plainly: when this is mine, what will I still be facing? 3. Notice whether the wanting loosens or stays the same. Do not argue with it. 4. Then do the next ordinary task as usual.

A man in his late fifties sits in a hospital corridor after his scan, scrolling through a car showroom's website because it is the only thing his mind will hold. Earlier that week the car had felt important. Now the pictures look flat. The verse speaks to exactly this moment. Krishna's teaching is that desire's objects lose their taste when death comes close. The man would first see that the flatness is not a fault in him but what the text describes. Then he would see what the wanting was actually for, which was a feeling of being secure and well. He could then ask what, besides the car, could give him that. The verse does not claim the answer is quick. Ordinary experience confirms that bad news drains the colour from small pleasures. The verse does not remove the fear, does not say what the scan will show, and does not replace the doctor he is waiting to see. It offers a steadier question to hold while he waits.
