Rites Spoiled Like Farming

What is heard of, the rewards the scriptures promise, is spoiled just as what is seen is: by rivalry, envy, loss and expense, and by the many obstacles in the way of a desire-driven act. Like farming, it often bears no fruit.

Three words carry the verse. Shruta means "what is heard," from shru, to hear. It names the Vedic rites and the heavenly rewards they promise, which the tradition learns by hearing. Spardha is rivalry, wanting to outdo the next person. Asuya is envy: the mind that cannot bear another's merit and hunts for faults. Krishna says the promised rewards are spoiled in the same way as the pleasures we see in this world. Rivals compete for the same prize and envy sours it. The effort costs more than planned and drains the one who makes it. Many obstacles stand between the rite and its result. Because the whole act is driven by kama, desire for a reward, it depends on things the doer does not control. Krishna compares it to farming: you sow carefully and the harvest can still fail. Uddhava might have concluded that earthly pleasure is flawed but heaven is safe. This verse closes that exit. Sridhara Svami reads the "heard" as the pleasures of the other world, which share the faults of those seen here. Krishna's point is not that the rites are worthless. A rite performed to get something is only as secure as the getting.

Picture a big family feast. Two aunts quarrel over who runs the kitchen. The ghee runs short, the guests arrive late, and the rain spoils the tent. After all that, the meal is gone within the hour. Effort aimed at a reward is like that: shared with rivals, costly, easily blocked, and over quickly.

1. Pick one task today that you are doing mainly for a reward: praise, a promotion, a good grade, a compliment on your cooking. 2. While you do it, notice whether you compare yourself to anyone, or begrudge someone else's success. 3. Also notice what you worry might go wrong, and how much of the result lies outside your hands. 4. That evening, write down one line about what the effort cost you compared with what it gave.

A man is arranging a large family puja at home. His cousin has criticised the flowers, his brother is competing over who pays more, the priest is running late, and the budget has already been passed. By noon he is tired and resentful, and the occasion is no longer the point. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna names the spoilers one by one: rivalry, envy, extra cost, delay, and the fact that the whole effort rests on wanting a result. The man can see which of these is working on him now. He can notice he is comparing himself with his brother, and he can ask whether the day is being done for its own sake or for credit. Ordinary experience confirms that effort tied to comparison and outcome is tiring and easily soured. The verse does not promise that the puja will go smoothly, that the cousins will behave, or that the money will stretch. It names the causes of the spoilage and leaves the doing to the man.
