Suppose the duty is done well and nothing gets in its way. Then hear where it leads. Having worshipped the gods here with sacrifices, the one who performs them goes to the world of heaven. There he enjoys heavenly pleasures like a god, pleasures he has earned himself. In a bright flying chariot, made from his own stored merit, he is sung about by the gandharvas, the celestial singers. He moves about among the goddesses, wearing charming dress.
Krishna has just said that rites are often spoiled by obstacles. Now he grants the best case: the duty is done properly and nothing interrupts it. He asks Uddhava to hear where that leads. Three words carry the passage. Dharma is duty, from dhri, to hold up: the right act that holds a life together. Yajna is sacrifice, the ritual offering to the gods. Svarga is heaven, the world of the gods, reached by merit. The sacrificer worships the gods with rites on earth and rises to svarga. There he lives like a god. The pleasures are divine, and Krishna stresses that he earned them himself. The flying chariot is built from his own punya, the stored merit of good acts. Gandharvas sing his praise, and he roams among goddesses in handsome dress. The picture is deliberately lovely. Krishna does not call this reward false or small. He describes it fully so that Uddhava sees what it is: a wage paid out of a stored account. The commentators read it as the strongest case for ritual duty, which is why it is drawn with care. The teaching is placed here because Uddhava is being shown what binds and what frees. Even the finest result of ritual is still a result of action, and action's results are held in an account that can run down. The passage asks the listener to look at the whole sum, the chariot and the music included, and to ask what it rests on.
A traveller stays in a grand hotel paid for by a prepaid voucher. The room is lovely, the meals are served, the staff bow. But every night the balance on the voucher drops. The hotel is heaven, the voucher is merit, and the pleasant stay runs only as long as the balance does.
1. Choose one thing you enjoy today that you worked for, such as a meal, a rest, or a purchase. 2. Before you enjoy it, say quietly, "This came from effort I made earlier." 3. Enjoy it fully, without hurrying. 4. Afterward, spend a minute noticing whether the enjoyment was complete in itself or already pointing toward the next thing you wanted.
A father stands in a hotel corridor on the last evening of a family holiday he saved for over three years. The bags are half-packed, the children are laughing in the next room, and he feels the trip already sliding away. The passage speaks to this moment. Krishna describes a pleasure that is truly enjoyed and truly earned, and he places it in a world where the account behind it is finite. For the father, that means the holiday can be received as a payment from earlier effort, with gratitude for the effort and with no sense of cheating, and without clutching at what cannot be kept. He can finish the evening present with his children and let the ending be an ending. Ordinary experience confirms that a pleasure which is dreaded in advance as something to be lost is half spent before it is over. The passage does not promise that the ending will hurt less, and it does not say what the father should save for or spend. It also says nothing about money, health or the children's needs, which still call for ordinary care and sensible planning.
