Among women, in songs that feed desire, wearing a garland of tinkling bells, he plays in the gods' pleasure-grounds, content, and does not see his own fall. He delights in heaven only as long as his merit lasts. When the merit is spent, driven by time, he drops back down, against his wish.

Krishna is describing what happens to someone who earns heaven by rites and good deeds. Three words carry it. Svarga is heaven, the world of the gods, a place of music, company and delight. Punya is merit, from a root meaning to purify: the stored result of good action, which pays for the stay. Kala is time, the force that moves everything along and cannot be argued with. Krishna paints the scene fully: the visitor plays among singing women, bells chiming, happy, with no thought of the end. Then he gives the rule. The enjoyment lasts exactly as long as the merit. Merit is a sum that gets used up. When it reaches zero, time carries him down, and he falls unwilling. He did nothing wrong. The stay was simply paid for, and the payment ran out. Krishna says this to Uddhava because Uddhava wants something lasting, and heaven, however bright, is not that. It asks the listener to see the price tag on every pleasure that has to be earned and spent. The commentators read the passage as a warning about the limit of such rewards, not as scorn for good action.

A lamp burns brightly in a closed room, and everyone admires the light. Nobody looks at the oil in its bowl. The flame is heaven's delight, the oil is merit, and the lamp goes dark on the hour the oil ends, whether or not anyone is ready.

1. Tonight, pick one pleasure you worked for: a meal, a show, a rest after work. 2. Before you start, say quietly to yourself what it cost: money, hours, effort. 3. Enjoy it fully for its whole length, without rushing. 4. When it ends, spend one minute noticing that it ended and what you feel. Do not reach for the next thing straight away.

A man sits on the last night of a resort week paid for by a year-end bonus. The pool glows, the music plays, and a part of his mind keeps checking the hour of the morning flight. The verse speaks to that part. Krishna says the stay in heaven lasts exactly as long as what paid for it, and the visitor, absorbed in play, never looks at the balance. The man in the scene does look. So he can do two things. He can enjoy the evening honestly, knowing it is a rented evening, and he can plan Monday without pretending the week will stretch. Ordinary experience agrees that pleasure bought with a limited stock is sweeter when its size is known, and sourer when the end arrives as a shock. The verse does not promise that leaving will stop hurting, or that the return to work will feel light. It also does not ask him to skip the holiday. It speaks of a fall that comes when the account is empty, and it asks only that he see the account.
