Krishna says: a man caught in wrong action through the company of the unworthy, whose senses are not mastered, who is ruled by craving, miserly, greedy, devoted to women, and harmful to living things, who kills animals against the rules to feed ghosts and spirit hosts, goes helpless into the hells. He enters a thick darkness. He does deeds that end in sorrow, and by those deeds he takes a body again. So what happiness is there for one who is bound to die?

Krishna is describing the opposite road to the heaven he has just described to Uddhava. Four words carry it. Adharma is wrong action, from the root dhr, to hold: what does not hold a life together. Asat-sanga is the company of the unworthy, where sat means what is real and good. Kama is craving, wanting that has taken over the one who wants. Tamas is darkness, the dullness in which a person cannot see what he is doing. Krishna's list moves in order. Bad company feeds wrong action. The senses go unmastered, so craving rules. Craving shows as greed, miserliness, lust and harm to creatures, including animal killing done against the rules for ghosts and spirits. Such a person falls to hells and into thick darkness, and he has no say in it. That helplessness is the point. He is carried by what he has made. Then Krishna gives the turn. The deeds that end in sorrow earn a body, and the body does more of the same deeds. Hence his closing question about happiness for one who must die. It sits under the text's heading about bondage coming from taking the body to be the self, and about the world being mithya. That word means the world does not last or hold, not that it is nothing. The commentators read the question as pointing away from every body-bound pleasure. The lesson for Uddhava is to see where the chain starts, which is company and unmastered senses, before it has hardened.

A man borrows at high interest to clear an old debt. He gets a quiet week, then a larger bill, then borrows again. Deeds that end in sorrow work the same way. Each one buys a body, and that body runs up the next bill.

1. Tonight, think of one habit that keeps costing you later, such as a snack, a scroll or a sharp reply. 2. Name the person, place or hour that usually sets it off. Write it on paper in one line. 3. This week, change only that one thing. Leave early, sit elsewhere, or pause for ten slow breaths before you act. 4. Each evening, note whether the habit came, and what you felt just before it.

A young man is at a friend's flat on the third late night running. The cards are out, the rent money is in his pocket, and someone says one more round. He has already lost more than he planned. The verse reads this moment as a chain, and he can look for the first link. The company set the pace. Tired and unsettled, he wanted relief more than he wanted sense. Each loss made the next bet feel more necessary. Seeing the chain does not stop the wanting, but it lets him ask where it began. He can leave now, hand the money to someone he trusts, or choose different company next week. Krishna's closing question is whether a life built this way can give lasting happiness. Ordinary experience agrees that the people around us shape what we do when we are worn down. The verse does not promise that leaving will be easy. It does not heal a gambling habit or debt on its own, and a person caught in a compulsion may need a doctor or counsellor as well. Krishna's teaching about hells and rebirth is his own, and is given here as his.
